Brian Densham Poem
Shall I roses, ruby hued
Shall I trinkets, gem imbued
Shall I words, in passioned mood
Promise love, sincere and true?
Shall I Cupid’s bow request
Shall I darts in you impress
Shall I pierce that perfect breast
Just to prove I love you best?
Not though heart should cease to beat
Not though breath should be deplete
Not though time should life defeat
Could I love you more, my sweet
No earthly flower, nor gift, nor sound
Nor arrow … pledge love more profound

Brian Densham Poem
The voluntary choosing of
Involuntary choice
An eloquent expression of
An apathetic voice
A tribute to the losing of
All reason to rejoice
That subtle executioner…
Routine

Brian Densham Poem
I put a man on the moon
… I helped
I carried flame across the sky
… Without a net
I took Heaven’s obsolete virginity
And displayed the taking
On a billion TV screens
For I am God’s child
And what there is, is mine
Mine to take
Mine to hold
Mine to stand by and watch die
I can do no wrong
For I define right
And I deny liability
For the past
The future is mine to expect …
Regardless

Brian Densham Poem
A child is like a memory that promises to be
An intriguing little echo of our brief mortality
A fuzzy new reflection of what has been before
That captures all the essence of our lives, yet … so much more
For each will add a suffix to the mantle of descent
A familiar revelation of a personal ascent
‘Til soon they too encounter their own human frailty
And aspire to hold their mirror that reflects eternity

Brian Densham Poem
I wake up at a different time and place each breaking morning
And set a new path on this earth that beggars all forewarning
One day I’ll try my hand at walking backward down the street
While wearing something lissome yet distinctly indiscreet
Then possibly I’ll pass some time with Nitze-by-the-sea
Considering the ocean’s purpose nihilistically
And if there’s time I’ll blow my mind with something by the bard
For Bill’s a bloke who still can smoke the glibbest avant-garde
And then I think the time may come to speak of many things
Like why we hear of mannequins but never mannekings
There’s lots of things I’ve never done, take suicide for instance
There’s naught to do that’s really new when all is nonexistence
Thus every day that I’m around I try for something special
No line-of-sight approach for me, my life’s been more tangential
So if it’s something new you seek, well that’s just not my game
If all my days are different, well then … every day’s the same

Brian Densham Poem
The forest crowds the small campsite
By dying fire’s meagre light
I listen for the furtive flight
Of Nature’s creatures of the night
As chirping crickets’ songs unite
The fearful in diurnal flight
Race through remains of day’s last light
From Nature’s creatures of the night
Soon eerie fireflies ignite
A spectral vision taking flight
Make clear their presence here in spite
Of Nature’s creatures of the night
And owls hid deep in trees recite
Relentless question to the night
But answerless remain despite
All Nature’s creatures of the night
In dark foreshortened without sight
But limned and measured by the quiet
My patience placidly invites
All Nature’s creatures of the night
As dawn resumes its daily rite
I do not revel in her light
For I have witnessed more than sight
Through Nature’s creatures of the night

Brian Densham Poem
I think about intelligence
And wonder why we think our due
Is sanctioned by our own IQ
That natural inheritance
Compels us by unbending laws
To evolutionary cause
That beggars to irrelevance
The truth that brains can be a threat
That make it easy to forget
The most compelling evidence
That intellect may well provide
A rationale for venal pride
Displacing sounder temperaments
With logical proficiency
Ignoring self-deficiency
And cultivates intolerance
With vanity incredulous
And tidy, hidden prejudice
That blithely leads to negligence
Denying those less capable
In contexts inescapable
I much prefer the elegance
Of caring for the other guy
Of answering a helpless cry
Of principled benevolence
That intellect cannot be taught
Beyond the wit of reasoned thought
I think about intelligence
That natural inheritance
That beggars to irrelevance
The most compelling evidence
Displacing sounder temperaments
And cultivates intolerance
That blithely leads to negligence
I much prefer the elegance
Of principled benevolence

Brian Densham Poem
Calm … Cool … Oasis … of defeat!
Reflections of what might have been
Dissolving in a rippling grin
Engorged with round endeavors
Unknowing … Uncaring
Drawing to your sodden depths
The unripe fruit of duffer’s quest
With naught to mark this ovoid feast
But gentle … jesting … lapping
Wet Nemesis!
I curse the void that clings to all
That fail to mark your distant shore
And in distain show no remorse
But quick! Return to mocking calm
To lurk beside the verdant way
Until the NEXT unfortunate
Attends your greedy call

Brian Densham Poem
Draw strength, draw strength from those who died
Make peace with those who lived
For in our memories all survive
Their deeds their times outlive
For peace they went, for peace they fought
Though some would not return
Yet with courageous deeds they taught
That freedom must be earned
Now we in peace and freedom dwell
This heaven they bequeath
To those who challenged death and fell
We dedicate our wreath
And though with passing years it seems
Their legacy might fail
Yet in our blood and in our dreams
Their souls are marching still

Brian Densham Poem
I lit every candle on your birthday cake
But I didn’t realize how long it would take
And when I got back to where I had begun
The first one I’d lit could no longer be found
So I started over and lit them in pairs
But that made no difference so I grabbed my spares
I tried them again only this time in three’s
The smoke got so bad that I started to sneeze
They blew out the candles so strong was their force
I tried it again only this time by fours
The flames got so high it near burned me alive
I had to start over but this time by fives
I lit them at arm’s length my safety in doubt
They set off the sprinklers which put them all out
I toweled the cake off for new candle sticks
And worked up my courage to try them by six
But when I tore open the box they were in
To my great surprise … only one lay within
So that is the reason, and make no mistake
There’s only one candle on your birthday cake
