One Birthday Candle

I lit every candle on your birthday cake
But I didn’t realize how long it would take

And when I got back to where I had begun
The first one I’d lit could no longer be found

So I started over and lit them in pairs
But that made no difference so I grabbed my spares

I tried them again only this time in three’s
The smoke got so bad that I started to sneeze

They blew out the candles so strong was their force
I tried it again only this time by fours

The flames got so high it near burned me alive
I had to start over but this time by fives

I lit them at arm’s length my safety in doubt
They set off the sprinklers which put them all out

I toweled the cake off for new candle sticks
And worked up my courage to try them by six

But when I tore open the box they were in
To my great surprise … only one lay within

So that is the reason, and make no mistake
There’s only one candle on your birthday cake
