The Whippoorwill sings every night
it begins as soon as it's dark
Soothing, comforting, helping me sleep tight

I listen and turn off the light
Instead, the stars shine and spark

How is it that my friend
Knew it was the end
Was a cardinal singing
At his windowsill
Releasing a song on the wind
Or did a lonesome whippoorwill
Whistle its warning of
Impending snow
How did he know
Were there ravens and owls
And dogs howling nearby
Or did he find a feather from
An angels wing that
Caught his eye
Fluttering in the evening
Twilight
And knew that night would soon fall
Did he hear the call
From the sweet voice of his mother
Did he see the hand extended from
His father
Guiding him through the yonder
Fields of the abyss
How did he know after
The diagnosis of COVID
It would be his time to go
And he laid himself down
In the hospital bed
Signing the DNR
And in ten days my
Dear friend was dead
RIP Tom
autumn wind
the whipoorwill
calls the evening
