Viewfinder Poems

Nikon Fever

Ever since it came to me
my Nikon has been doing stupid things.

It has hung from cliff edges
just to capture an image of a small lizard
I could have photographed in my backyard.
Its gazed at clouds until imagined
dragons chased swans over the heavens
knowing all the while
that its viewfinder was triggering me.

It grew heavier on my neck
demanding I follow it into spiky brush
searching for a miniscule insect
that no one cared a damn about.

Once I fell into a creek trying to snap a heron.
I swear I heard that Nikon shutter click
just behind my floundering head.

The faded vibrancy of your smile
Through the exposure we set
Knocks the breath right from my chest
Life through the viewfinder keeps focusing on you
Unsaturated love turning shades of grey
I'm still adjusting to the light
of a life with you nowhere in sight

Drama Drama

Twenty six metres of a thunderous clap multiplied by an octave divided by an individual sunrise equals the power of a dusky sky dome. When the exact position of a cat is on an angle always use the viewfinder. As viewfinders are often rewound or fast forwarded and thus the array of Catlett is a sight to behold. Oh look what is passing it is a windsurfing hedgehog in a daring wave leaping competition with the forty eight frogs nine willows and fortuitous and sturdy smiling oak tree. Python pulling playing pianoforte pleasingly. Hahaha dramatisation *** 1 2 3 4 5 dance dance dance xxxxx good *** ha ha ha ***

You Will Be Next

A distant shadow waving at me
That cold eyes is lurking in the dark
Song of the death ringing in my ears
I look upon the sky
And see nothing but a pitch black
Screams of horror breaks the loneliness
Pool of blood fills my viewfinder
Yet I find them intriguing
What a beautiful scenery
For myself never feel guilty
I pray for you
So you will not be the next

Urban Nightscapes

After dark, the prosaic comes alive
morphed by a klieg lit stage—
at once, both peaceful and kinetic.

A neon world of predator and prey,
through my viewfinder
garish greens and vivid reds
play with the afterglow of twilight sky.

I try to capture saccharin sweetness
and the promise of forbidden fruit.
I thrill when a percussive din
shatters the vesper stillness.

I’ve learned this murky realm
of mixed lighting and chiaroscuro charm
is best rendered without filters
and the patience of a saint.

For twenty years I’ve meandered through great cities
camera in tow, prowling the grittiest parts of town.
Working quickly to record a vanishing scene
and to keep out of harm’s way,
after dark, it’s scary and electric.

Photographer

Just give me an aperture
and a shutter speed too
with a bright viewfinder
and a good lens or two.

I’ll take some pictures
in fact quite a few
I will almost certainly
take a picture of you.

But not just anyhow
I like to take my time
It has to be a bit special
a moment frozen in time.

I like to make a picture
something special you see
Not just any old thing, but
a photograph made by me.
