SUNFLOWERS
Sunflower comes from Greek words “helios” for sun and “anthos” for flower.
Unique Greek romantic sad myth of unrequited love of water
Nymph Clytie, who loved the Sun God Apollo, who had no interest in her.
Flower appears to follow the sun, as it moves each day from east to west,
Like how Clytie gazed up at Apollo and hoped to glance or look at her.
One sided love, never reciprocated for Apollo was in love with somebody else.
Wilted away by refusing to eat or drink because Apollo did not return her love.
Eventually Clytie was gradually transformed into a sunflower by other Gods.
Resembling the shape of the sun with magnificent bright yellow petals.
Striking, bold, beautiful flower faces toward the sunshine, named after the sun.

Sunflower, you tower over the lower blooms
Until lack of rain bows your head in humility
Near the end of September,
Forgiving, you cast to the wind your bounty of seeds
Lavishly nourishing the birds, too;
Only what we harvest are relished
We are healthier for your giving us this tasty treat
E veryone enjoys from time to time before the fire
Reliving the memories of Kansas summer heat.
