something is under the wheelbarrow today
It moved up in the air in a weird way
a monkey? a squirrel? tiger or bear?
a faerie queen with gobs of sparkly green hair?
the wheelbarrow moved ever so slightly
whatever it is, can I afford to take it lightly?
what if it is a kitten, a bird or a large puppy?
a whale? a shark? or perhaps a teensy guppy?
the green wheelbarrow started to shiver and shake.
this is a real story, true all the way through, not a bit fake.
a column of red fire ants paraded out, a thousand in all.
proud and fierce, all puffed up, with lots of gall.
Then a snake, a whale, a dolphin, and a baboon.
They brought with them a storm and a little monsoon.
I stared at it amazed, wondering what else would come out.
My husband was the last one, and he gave a big shout.

If only we hadn't intertwined our destinies under that sky full of cold stars,
I wouldn't now feel the pain that burns like a smoldering fire in the depths of my heart,
Your touch wouldn't haunt my memories like a ghost in the long and silent nights,
I wouldn't relive our moments like an old film playing on the screen of my mind,
I wouldn't feel the immense void you left, a vast ocean of silence and longing,
I struggle on the waves of time, shipwrecked in search of a shore of forgetfulness,
Not knowing you, perhaps I would have been spared the pain that surrounds me like a fog,
My soul wouldn't have been caught in the snares of endless sadness,
It would have been an escape from the agony of a broken heart, pulsing with the rhythm of longing,
Our love, an ephemeral flower, bloomed only to wither in time,
And perhaps we would have remained strangers, keeping within us only the silence of an untold story,
But without knowing you, I would never have felt the beauty of a fleeting love.

Who is under that hat we wondered as she disembarked.
I had never seen such a contraption that was so not easily parked.
It was feathered and fluffed, with flounces that said United Nation.
Had a mind of its own, this glorious concoction, fabulous creation.
We could not see her face, but I knew she would be a famous someone.
Kind of a hat that would not be easily dissuaded. It turned to the sun.
Soaking up the rays at that bandstand, as we watched our children play.
I tried to see the woman’s face, but it was under a veil of lace that day.
She was a mystery woman, in the best hat we had ever seen in July.
It shaded her completely, as we watched fireworks in the sky.
She climbed back in her limo and was whisked away at midnight.
We waved to her and her glorious hat until they disappeared!

Are you smiling under that mask
What’s the alternative, yes I did ask
Would you rather be grumpy and frown, oh come on
That’s not much fun if you’ve tried it very long
I’m going to smile despite this face mask
And why is that now I know you should ask
Because smiling feels good even if you can’t see
And a smile spreads happiness, consider that please
So when you look above my mask, up towards the sky
You’ll know that I’m smiling, you can see it in my eyes
