Someone has been on my deck;
footprints abound in snow.
I wonder if there's been a break-in.
I checked the locks... But, no.
But someone seems to be drawn to this place
for reasons I don't know.
Unless they think there's something here
that they can take and go.
I made a plan to catch them.
Seems they're active most at night.
For every morn I wake and look,
there's new prints at first light.
At 6am I snuck downstairs
and much to my delight,
there's junkos, wrens and cardinals
and titmice taking flight.
The feeders must have drawn them.
There's nothing else to eat.
I'll drink my morning coffee, and
enjoy my front row seat.

Shorn from arbor crowns by sharp northern breeze
Aging maple leaves curl like rumpled rugs,
Falling as stars amidst disrobing trees
Shivering in the face of hoar frost hugs.
A wee mouse sniffs wind which wakens his needs.
Snuffling with fury, tossing leaves about
To find nuts and seeds among grass and weeds
He scratches and scurries with whiskered snout.
His tit-mouse neighbor hurries to his spouse
Twittering that it’s time to fetch some seeds;
Together they gather and chase off grouse
To hide in the grass of murky marsh meads.
Furry gray mouse and tan titmice agree
To stay winter’s course in tunnel or tree.

a fallen pine log:
red-cockaded woodpeckers
taps their lost fair well
****The Red-cockaded Woodpecker has less than 1% of its original population. They make their home in mature pine forests, preferably long leaf pine, which have been drastically reduced due to disease and harvesting. While other woodpeckers bore out cavities in dead trees where the wood is rotten and soft, the Red-cockaded Woodpecker is the only one which excavates cavities exclusively in living pine trees. They play a key role in their ecosystem. A number of other birds and small mammals use the cavities excavated by Red-cockaded Woodpeckers, such as chickadees, bluebirds, titmice, and several other woodpecker species, reptiles, and insects. Florida, my home, is one of the remaining southern states they are still found in. Steps are being taken to protect and recreate their nesting grounds***********

It is necessary to live
because a wind whispers
something urgent to the trees,
and the autumn sky still
gives sunshine to light the day.
The wind knocks on a window
with rain or with casual rhyme.
It promises always the same,
«We shall find keys for our success!»
It is necessary to live,
because shining stars in the night sky
are so lovely!
Yes, the cranes flew away,
but the titmice sing for us in the mornings.
And verses ripen as bunches of grapes
and give us curative force.
The weeks still are not too cold!
It is necessary to live
and to live happily!
