Coastal Ghosts
Coastal ghosts

Out of the foam
when a mighty wave crashed ashore
came a pair of transparent
horses
flying mane of course
They were last seen
galloping
upland where the mist
was settling for the evening...

Three Senryu
Senryu

A year is a breath
A trivial cosmic moment
For me it is life

Life is not a plateau
But a stormy uphill struggle
The upland is a dream

He stopped dreaming
In the middle of the night
Death fell soft as rain....

The Giant Lumberjack
There was a very old giant lumberjack of England,

who was invited to dinner at a wood-house upland,

but the chimney was a wee bit low,

and the doorway came up to his toe,

he cut down the house and they dined on bare land....

Winter Walks On Water
Winter walks on water
      To greet us each year
In the great north of Great Lakes--
Though not as far as
Old Nikomis' wigwam on Gitche Gumee's
Upland shore.

Fisherman's bird flies in snow-
Falling on brown waves.
White caps sing to the
Frosty blanket from afar,
"Hiawatha, can you still hear me?"...

Green clinger on arid arroyo rock,
Spring blooms of faded yellow you did drop.
Desert dry took a toll of leaf and branch
Leaving photosynthesis to your bark.
Life is tough, lizard kissed, so short and harsh.
Unlike upland cousins, you are blessed:
In your shelter rests a saguaro babe,
Whose stately arms one day will take your place.

Nestled woodland, leaves on line,
   thick, straight, and curving.
Mounded upland, forms eternal,
   Rounded, angled, and yielding.

Circled valley, meadows, fields,
   shapes, and pathways winding.
Seasons quartered, warm and cool,
   rust and mustards flying.

Upward outward, textured daybreak,
   quiet breezes low:
Close encounter, canvas earth,
to view, to feel, to grow....

At the Surgery
At the surgery

Here we are at the clinic`s
waiting room,
a fat lady with bandaged big toe,
and an old man leans on his walking stick
he lives alone.

An ancient couple from the upland,
dressed in their Sunday best,
hold hands and look endearing,
a youngish woman who keeps rummaging
through her bag, and me.

Six pairs of feet in a slow shuffle,
Electrocardiography doesn’t
mend a tired heart, only tells
us we are mortal...

Upland
On the upland at the slope,
 magnificent water tumbles.
 On the talus climber stumbles,
on small, dewy leaves of grass.

To his eyes disclosed is spa,
 marvelous mountains, falls and streams,
 fabled landscape -
 rare appearing frail flora.

Leafed trees and conifers,
 crooked wood and little flowers.
 Raining often – scary blizzards.

Slanted sidewalks among ranges.
There the weather quickly changes –
 swiftly hunting are the buzzards....
