Children battle bedtime
'Cause the day is so much fun
That it's hard to call it quits
When the playing's not quite done.

It's the opposite with grown-ups
For the prospect of some sleep
Means our minds will catch a breather
From the burdens that we keep.

So we listen as the grandkids
Fight requests to go to bed
When there isn't any place that we

eyes still red and 
itchy from the raw California spring,
I still ached from the mud,
now dry as an old bone,
yet the memory was stagnant,
stiff with truth,
about the terrain....
straight from the neutral countenance of the geologist's mouth,
way too much to believe,
and now,
the breather.....
between April and the next rainy season,
is insulated relief....

There may just be a silver lining 
Her lifeblood no longer quickly drains
From her old and deep and weary veins
No longer does it hurt to breathe
No smoggy air to make her wheeze
Regaining sight and through the tears
She hadn’t seen the stars for years 
Skin once wrinkled begins to heal
And younger she begins to feel
For a while, she thinks, it will be easier

Staring past the curtain,
At the vigilant crow upon the mast,
The creature unaware of a presence,
In a moment forever lost.

Unflappable in its endeavour,
A breather from its hunt,
A distorted view of the world,
Its cackle alerting its murder..... of its next tenacious stunt!

Unperturbed by darkness,
Its itinerary meticulous, movement, stealth like,
As day gives way to darkness,
A sky drifting magenta decline

Feeling hated, and rejected,
Feeling alone and unloved,
I have feelings I don’t like,
I regret the spilling of my blood.

I need a breather,
But no air for me to breathe,
I need to be free,
But there is no space for me.

Chained to a life of sadness,
Is this machine still moving about?
Or is it broken?
Or am I my own machine of torment?

Crying in the shadows,
No one can hear me,
Nor can they see the tears that phase the ground,
So much suffering I am enduring....

The mind is quicksilver,
it doesn’t stop and quiver.
It’s sure and real,
and knows no equal.

The mind can be good and bad,
or even happy or sad.
It flits one way,
and then the other all day.

I take time to be still,
and accept no thrill.
I take time that is mine,
just to stop and be divine.

I let my mind into the ether,
and it takes a well-earned breather.
I just let it go,
and myself I then know.

Finally, there’s untold happiness,
from a mind of quicksilver bliss....
