Quietly
The hum of sunrise
Awakens the day.
Cutting the familiar wake
Of an old butter knife
Un-noticed
Silent swans
Skirting the lily pads
Pass sunning turtles
Wary eyed muskrats
And bug-eyed frogs.

Mesmerized minions made millions, merely making mincemeat.

Miss Maddie Muskrat mastered Missouri mud
Reveling and rolling in it in a joyful way
Catfish groused that she was mucking up the river
Bass, bluegill and crappie told catfish off

Muskrat makes us happy with her positive attitude
Catfish had never thought about that side of it
He adjusted his attitude and began enjoying her mud antics
They became happy friends after that, thanks to this lecture...

Badgers were planning a picnic extraordinaire!
Red Jell-O mold towered high in the spring air.
Shall I put a cherry on top? Asked persnickety Claire.
Why not? Said another. Baby muskrats are here.

Where is your mama? Asked Mrs. Badger then.
The babies giggled and rolled and hung down a chin.
I hope she is safe, Mrs. Badger told her husband man.
If not, we have three more orphans to join our little band....

Dew’s panache from morning’s wash
mystic glow with sighing sough.

Senses heightened and enlightened.
Hare bides hole, fidgeting mole; 
musky muskrats, batting bats;
sweet sugar canes, berry stains.

Nature feeds our feral needs.
Nature clears our eyes and ears.
Nature hones sensitive nose.

Beaver maintenance crews
make ready

frogs retreat
while the mud is soft

Osprey screech
above naked woods

A doe follows
a scented path

Turtles secure
their mobile homes

A woodpecker
sends Morse code alerts

The ice shell
creeps

Winter exhales
across the pond
