For a Vacuum Cleaner
For all the work you do,
those daily chores beyond the norm
in a pinch you come through,
a vacuum cleaner built so strong.
For you my electric power broom
on dust and grit do raid.
You chase dirt from any room.
So very thankful you were made.
A vacuum cleaner, dust buster machine
this is an ode to you
Can't just say you're a woman's routine
a man needs a sturdy one too.

Lined up
they perch in spaced formation,
ready to take fright and scatter
should a roving hawk approach too near.
I don't know why
they seem insulated from the deadly current,
or why
they make such a reckless target
for the raptors.
A cat looks at them
from a city pavement.
I do know what it is thinking.
The differing spaces between the starlings
could be musical notations.
A language just for cats and hawks,
