Paradise Lost?

Where eagles fly high
And bison and deer run free,
The land of the brave.

Where the planes fly high
And highway and mall hold sway,
The land of the grave.

Home Sweet Home

Outstanding scenes,
Kaleidoscope sunsets.
Land of the bison,
And rivers of peace.
Home of the brave,
Open blue skies,
Majestic colored hills,
And beautiful landscapes.

Beach Traffic

The THUNDERING HERD
of beach goers,
like bison of the hunt.
Echoes of Doppler
caterwauling down the two lane.
Each one,
dodging, weaving,
horns blowing,
vie to be first.

Buffalo Dreams

A buffalo’s another name for bison,
Don’t you know?

But you can’t boil your Christmas pud
Inside a buffalo …

This is a pun on the word “basin”, which Londoners (and Aussies) pronounce “bison”.
It’s an English thing …

Honoring Black Diamond

Black Diamond lived in New York City’s Central Park Zoo
From 1893 to 1915, and he was popular too.
This bison was honored by the US buffalo nickel which looked like him.
His caretakers gave Black Diamond all kinds of treats, on a whim.

Clouds

Written January 25, 2016

Clouds rolling through blue pastures like bison over buildings
Perched atop the spires that yield signals to lands far away
Speaking truths to any ear that will listen
In any language worth speaking

Inventive Humans

We invented the spear, and the mammoths were dead. Then our flintlocks and muskets filled bison with dread. Next came chainsaws and oil: planting bones in the soil. What new wonders I wonder will spring from our head?

18 and 83

Eighteen and eighty-three
Cinema poetry
Wagons precarious
Bandits? Hilarious!
Not so gregarious
Shooting at me!

Lightning miss yellow hair
Not too bad, pretty fair
Oregon, here we go
Shooting a buffalo
With Sam, Comanche beau
Bison for free!

Oglala Lament: December, 1890

We cannot eat lies
or feast on empty promises

No more than the bison,
starving in the desert sand

We cannot clothe our children
as we run from the Wasichus

Our teepees torn and freezing
amidst the winter snows

(Pine Ridge South Dakota: Late September, 1994)

Domestic Animals

Relieved from horrible attacks of lions
Elephants, hippos, Crocodiles, bears, wolves
Tigers, cape buffalos and wood bison...
Cows and sheep and goats and rabbits and swine
Chicks and ducks took shelter under humans
Only to die each moment fearing slaughter...!

The Hunter Painted the Bison.

In pre-historic times
Man painted on walls
the things he wished
for.Food.Success
So holy was this act
it migrated to churches.
Success.Power.
What we wish for.
Eastern art contains
natures elements.
A mountain.A river.
Our peaceful dreams.
Art is important.
Everybody loves it.

Values In Life 1

Life is full of fun;
But without batten
Of values beacon
Life will be just a hun.
If you want in life won
Approx values bidden –
Not money, values one
Can lead to success done.
Difference between bison
And you is not a billion
But values based action.
It sets your steps begun
From beast to a good human.

bison stepped on my foot today

Brutish bison stepped on my left foot today
Making me less merry, forcing me to delay
It weighed a ton, so what could I do?
I yelled “Get off of my tennis shoe!”

Skittish bison got startled and galloped away
My toe is broken, bleeding, its nail is turning gray.
So, I cannot come over for my play date today.
Maybe you should invite my cousin Jay.

Mike Tyson

Controversial boxing legend with a distinctive lisp, "Iron Mike" Tyson.
The sheer impact of his punch? Probably like being rammed by a Bison.

Ex-convict/former bad boy; paid his debt to society without exemption.
Came out of prison, got boxing license back, took road to redemption.

Bison Belt

It is odd that I have made it this many years without the knowledge that I needed a bison belt. Hank’s sells one with a one hundred year warranty. My parents should have given me one fifty years ago. But I’m going to live forever, so I figured, sure, why not. They need to up their game, go for the two hundred year guarantee. They can call it the bison-tennial edition…

Yellowstone Bison

“Oh, give me a home where the buffalo roam …” —Dr Brewster M Higley VI

Oh, give me a home ...
where the big bison bellow,
bellowing in beautiful
bucolic backgrounds,
backgrounds begging
backpackers beware,
beware of being beset by
big bison bellowing!

Beset by a bison?
Bison basics best behavior—
Better to back up bovine-like
than be busted up by a bison

Better believe it!

Spirit Grass

spirit grass

wind wanders through
invisible bison graze
raise dust devils that flirt with larks
buzzing insects in the air
swirl dip rise into the sun

swishes almost whispers
play around ears
not quite within range for words
ghosts less than clear
more than shadows, skydance

green blades reach
between the bones of children
grandmothers, mothers, wise men
sweet red blood fed the roots
a time ago

Midwest Gifts

Shining sun and thunderous rain
Bear, bison, and whooping crane

The blowing wind and falling leaves
Blooming bulbs and honey bees

Winter, Summer, Spring and Fall
Hardwood trees growing tall

The rivers great and creeks so deep
The golden crops of summer wheat

Ozark Mountains and prairie grass
Carp, paddlefish, and large mouth bass

Whether waterfall or large rock cliffs
These are a few of the Midwest gifts

Matters of Dawn

Poison onion rings
                                                Bunion on a sling
                                              Rustic carriage bolts
                                        Shoe string eating antelopes
                                         Cankered bison crying wolf
While dancing under the heated son
No one comes this is the dawn

Burnt Offering

to cremations

I once bled black sin
it poured from mine heart and kin
once cooled it curdled into crimson
heavy thick n haired like a bison
open and free to parch the land
to match the beat of the oncoming band
never in the crowded ground
whilst markers lost point to me found
chop down a tree and place me on it
burn my sins and flesh til they split
offer me up to the king of all
so that I may never again fall
but rise ever more onto him as a
burnt offering.

Reels

“The more I learn about people, the more I like my dog ” ~attributed to Mark Twain
The only "reels" I watch on Facebook are ones about animals, mostly dogs and cats, and the occasional horse, and once in a while elephants, raccoons, bear and deer/elk/moose, and of course, bison/buffalo, really, just any sort of critter that isn't human, and won't remind me that the world doesn't want me, doesn't care about me, and never did.
