Our brains push away
as humanity pulls
Cerebrum benighted
—emotion to school
(Villanova Pennsylvania: March, 2019)
The distant echo
of my lost awareness
rings the canyon walls
No clear way out
one final shout
—benighted to recall
(Dreamsleep: September, 2023)
Every day
I wake up
See my wife
The love of my life
Sleeping there
In the dawn’s early light
I pray out
To the Gods
All of them
God, Allah and Buddha
Thank you
For bringing me
This guardian angel
To save my benighted soul
Everything but the spoken word
is aware of its existence:
vegetation, rivers, the stars;
they are centered on nothing else.
They, all, comprise the universe.
Even this imprudent poet
lives it in part, less dignified
within it save benighted
freedom of my talkative mind.
The chosen
tone deaf
to their fortune
Musicians
their heads
in the sand
The roadies
eat pizza
still frozen
While Angels
play bass
in the band
Indulgence
the pick
on their fretboard
Entranced
by the lure
of the bong
Benighted
the riffs
play without them
Not going
or coming
— just gone
(The New Room: March, 2024)
You won't lead me down the primrose path
I refuse to be your benighted minion
So shove your beautifully woven tapestry of lies
You won't lead me down the primrose path
'Tis an aesthetically looking road to perdition
God is the way; the route to the highest of highs
You won't lead me down the primrose path
I refuse to be your benighted minion

As a red fireball sun rises
Setting pine silhouettes ablaze
A damp coolness really disguises
The warmth soon to flow from gold rays
Doves' cooing entertains quiet
Roosters excitedly invite
A welcome to day's varied diet
Another gift from God's good insight
All of nature seems excited
Another day of love to the fill
While mankind lingers benighted
His dreams dowsed mostly unfulfilled
So spake it benighted and call it sad
For thy dulcet dreams man never had
With dreams ephemeral and longings eternal
What pain doth bring if spring's art vernal?
Longing for the river in love's wishing rove
Dancing light shimmers abreast a kissing clove
Happiness shan't part nor need feign
Prithee thy heart heft; bereft of pain
For the kisses in dew and her heart is thine
The blossoms are beau when our lips entwine
scarcely noted tinge of moribund intent
in stealth advances to dull selene’s
full aspect with penumbral shade
luna’s wizened glow, its fate assured,
in grim surrender—stolid umbra
spreads somber cloak of death
benighted orb, a wound erupts,
suffused with crimson, yet artemis endures—
poets’ pens stilled by mid-april’s red moon

I stand here, spinning rhyme;
child of destiny, soul of time.
Born on this benighted sphere;
Absent grasp of why I'm here.
Summoned by a distant voice;
made aware of surfeit’s choice.
Confusion reigns, coruscant light;
alone I stand in abject plight.
I am static, prey of change;
I abhor the constant rearrange.
Portrait of all I abjure;
life a schism to endure.
Thus I let my spirit soar,
for I am meant for so much more.
Adjectival expansion:
describing the resident
of the Executive Mansion:
I give you, the President …
mean, obscene,
rotten, misbegotten,
rough-hewn, jejune,
numb, dumb,
rude, lewd,
sadistic, hubristic,
orange-dyed, red-tied,
frightful, spiteful,
greedy, weedy,
grim, dim,
crabby, flabby,
freely-swearing, diaper-wearing,
furious, incurious,
sallow, shallow,
benighted, indicted,
painted, tainted,
addicted, convicted.
Mine eyes shall come benighted - Sunshine gone;
Winded upon final stretch of marathone.
Whilom self - A Brother - Cousin - Friend,
Writer - Son; An earthly throb dealt its end.
Fated finish line - Spirit delighted;
Many questions answered when enlighted.
O blues come - weep not at a shallow grave,
As I'll be heart bound yet - Not in such grave.
'Twas a soul exhausted and it called home;
'Tis that same presence in such a poem.
-Dedicated to all those suffering with an eating disorder. Beauty, true beauty, belies a gentrified, pretty exterior. You are not alone-
Benighted whispers and spurning dreams
Forthwith in blisters and burning streams
Shameful saunters in billowing blight
Hereto haunters with pillowing plight
Weep and wither betwixt a bawling bloom
Seep shall deliver amidst a falling fume
Expel and deliver for the morning's bright
Swell and shiver for the swarming's night
-
I’ve slung high upon my shoulders
The burdens I’ve to bear,
I’ve trudged upon that weary road
Benighted by despair;
O’ yet the sun rises on the morrow,
Thus to shine again,
But I must dream each night away
To see that day begin!
I’ve slogged along the twisted road
And steered the daily coils,
I’ve languished on the dark defeats
That lie within the toils.
O’ yet dawns another sunny day
To field my way again,
Still I must dream each night away
To see that day begin!
