though it's your warriors who blast away humans from the land,
you're liable,

you can never wash away the blood of guilt from your hand!

How many calories in
a muddy tower of winter-shed leaves?
What taste on the tongue
of white-capped rapids as they lap
at the dirt monolith? What sound
it makes as the tower falls, finally,
into the belly of that river,
where the fish and our reflections live?
I do not know if they’re answerable
questions, but I ask away, if only
to remind myself that the river
is just as alive as I claim to be.
