I sit firmly, hard, arms crossed, not doing it no matter what.
A nurse's aide comes in. She says "Therapy dog is down at X-ray today."
I jump into that wheelchair like the bed was on fire, and away we go.
No dog in sight, but a very savvy nurse's aide....

Orange Crush made us feel grown.
We were kind of older, on our own.
Grape Kool-aide was set aside.
We had cola now, and potatoes, fried.

I remember thinking the fizz made me feel old.
I was all of fifteen; Orange Crush taste was gold.
We were wearing two-pieced swim suits on the beach.
Eating hamburgers too, which cost twenty-five cents apiece....

As if we could not guess it, we could barely see her floor.
Yarm was everywhere, in magnificent colors galore.
Variegated, twisted, baby soft, a knitted band aide on her sore.
Afghans piled high on couches were sleeping with a snore.

out of the fire
her mother is gone
her brother is gone
her sister is gone
her sex is gone
she's reached 
adulthood.

she throws a tantrum
she loses her focus
and brother satisfies
her hunger for attention
as the tantrum recedes
adulthood gets further
away.
 
and now we see why
she's in need of first aide
for her burns.
