We can harvest well,
But we must plant our saplings;
We can build up luck.

Saplings
Saplings die strange deaths.
Mowed over by cars
who’ve lost their minds.
Beaten by the rain.
Shot through with hailstones.
Leaves stripped by the wind.
Fractured limbs tore off and hurled to the ground.
Tagged!
Saplings suffer here.
Chaff and choke on carbon.
Slaughtered by untrained children.
Disrespected by male dogs.
Bent low by the occasional
whirlwind of life.
Shocked by the sudden pop, pop sound.
Stunted in growth by lead moist air then
fired as kindling.
Dead saplings smolder
with embers that carry enough heat
to make heads turn asking,
“Where are those sapling trees?”
What kind of shade would they have given?
and saying,
“Those trees mattered!”

Start
Dripping rain on the fallen seeds
Behold, the saplings grow!
Nurture the sprouts all their needs
A lovely plant begins to show
The little child like the sapling grow
Nurtured by teachers in the nursery
His inherent qualities begin to show
If the nurturing is not just cursory
The sprout soon turns into a tree
That withstands storms and gives shade
The sweet fruits of labor one can see
As it stands firm and can’t be swayed
The “Sapling Nursery” is the place
Where little “saplings” grow
These visuals reveal their expressive face
As their exuberance begin to glow!
End
