Colonisation Poetry Contest
Kai Michael Neumann

Hawaii, my birthplace, and hometown
Fell victim of being colonized and uprooted
Those dirty rats ceased the cheese
By the 1900's the U.S annexed the territory
In other words, Hawaii was taken by force
And without consent
It's like the dirty rats came in and flexed their muscle
Much to the heartache and protest of the natives
Those disease-carrying rodents overthrew the kingdom
Queen Liliuokalani was forced to abdicate
A cultural genocide took root
The teachings of Hawaiian in schools wiped out
Housing and land requisitioned and displaced by military bases
And the underbelly of those dirty rats grew and grew
Today Hawaii is still a tropical paradise
Tourists flock to the island in droves
There are palm trees and sandy beaches everywhere
But it's the whispers and echoes of the natives
Pointing a finger at the dirty rats
And bemoaning their freedom and the 50th star on the flag
That will be forever lost

N/A-Another one. What else is new? I should go back to playing checkers.

NOUVELLE CUISINE

Nouvelle cuisine the waiter said, as he served the food to me
Where’s the rest I asked him, as I’d earlier skipped my tea
Tiny bits of something on a massive bloody dish
I tried to woo my girlfriend by pretending I was swish

You can pick the restaurant, was my very first mistake
I thought she’d pick our local for some scampi or a steak
Instead she chose Pierre’s, which was going to be steep
I’d heard the food was lovely though the prices made you weep

I gazed upon the menu, which was written out in French
And scanned along the prices, which made my buttocks clench
To refrain from looking stupid, I ordered some red wine
We requisitioned dinner and prepared ourselves to dine

A puny bowl of soup arrived, we felt a touch irate
We had to eat it quickly or it could evaporate
The main course had potato which was hidden by some meat
Five al-dente vegetables, all stacked up nice and neat

A de-constructed rhubarb tart, that’s what they served us next
Though why they took it all apart has left us kinda vexed
We left a tip and paid the bill…a pretty hefty fee
Then dandered into town and we got a KFC

Forfeited Language

I am tied to royalty
the way oceans
are fastened to
 moon fluctuations

the way our skin
absorbs sun's radiation
with mathematical
efficiency
producing Nubian
improvisations

from translucent tans
and honey hued browns
to shades of ink
that rivaled midnight
when we opened our eyes
the earth contained starlight

 tied to royalty
we made ivory crowns
fashionable
and kings requisitioned
vines for chains

If the moon's pull
causes oceans to move
towards her
My desire must've danced
with my design
before our skin collected
freedom's anthem

Beauty made in abstentia
baptized by indigo
 vision, piercing

One hundred years in
our language
started to fade
A cerebral infraction occurred
on the grandest scale
unimaginable
we suffered
word extinction

man muted, forced fed
profits, I wonder
if we'd ever know truth
that didn't involve
"In God We Trust?"

My tongue wants to
form words, my mind
cannot name

Royalty, money laundered loyalty

Corridors of Power

Shadows in dark corners, silhouetted figures
Floating down corridors of protected power,
Sanctuary for schemers and hungry vultures
Circling impoverished prey for them to devour,

grey suits that compliments their complexion
Their dark thoughts, intentions flow through their head
egoistical aims to promote re-election
to Westminster palace, blue, yellow green or red,

Political Party machines turn, produce laws
by invisible people in air conditioned
Rooms, payed for by my hard work and yours
For them to squander on favoured requisitioned,

Pacts and treaties sort on sports grounds,
amendments enhance ideological thoughts,
for power, to promote wealth has no bounds
anything in their way, they have high courts,

Power is the game, wealth is their ultimate aim,
to rule by fear, threats, to impoverish people,
World Politics are played, their goal exact same,
Why do we allow them to be so deceitful?

Cold Facts

COLD FACTS

ugly truth…

snow-whites dwarves
worked in a betting
shop and wore
dresses for fun

the ugly sisters
were neither ugly
sisters or even
woman so not
remotely…
interested in
prince charming

bombs are not fitted
with clocks. They explode
spontaneously
like requisitioned cars
that nosedive into
a ravine and blow up

killing the handsome sheriff
and all his sidekick
cowboys that quell his
dreams

Evolution

My existence only exists
So that I can be requisitioned
From a life without you.
I live with the hope
you’ll still chose me as the years roll by
I die a little each time
you don’t reach out and touch me
kills me softly
Waking up in world forever changed,
I don’t want to exist
where only the strong survive.
Let me be weak beneath your sunny skies
Give me the energy I need to stand erect
Evolve, move away from barely making it,
beyond faking it, immune to whatever
might harm us
Exist in a place that’s filled with
your presence. Omni this or that.
Show me where heaven is at
and I’ll meet you there.
In that place where you’re always loving me
more than I deserve.
Surfing against the waves of extinction
climbing out of oceans to bathe in your promise.
