Heartbeat
Your heart stopped.
For some reason, I hoped it wouldn’t.
Silence.
Then I started up again.
Your eyes don’t look scared.
You never were.
We pause then leave quickly.
As if we are late for something.
I knew your heart would stop.
I knew it would be instant.
My own heart didn’t.
I feel my heartbeat.
When I wake up from the nightmares.
I feel my heartbeat.
As if it’s your own.
And we thump in sync.
Your heart stopped.
I dreamt it didn’t, but it did.
Your heart stopped.
But you still smile.
Your heart stopped.
But you still purr.
Your heart stopped.
And nothing more.
