The Principle of Polarity
never on the news, never in books or movies
it’s people who like being a forgotten america
who like being on the frontier where the pioneers’
worship songs still ring in cacophony with the
songs of the spokane competing to capture
that illimited spirit of freedom which the ponderosas
whisper about when you sit on a grassy hill
overlooking the city where the hippies and punks
move like secret agents through the pickup trucks
and baseball caps and illumined you feel that america
hums with violence but the escape is too sweet and
we walk through underpasses arcing above us like
giant fossils the city mounts to the sky like ebullient
honeycombs each star is a secret like a soul america
where a great number of sober freemasons set up a
capitalist experiment in the homelands of native
nations still with intact shamanic culture and
the result was nothing less than rock and roll
