I only wish she hadn’t cried the tears meant for me while she burned under a merciless sun

I only wish she hadn’t cried the tears meant for me while she burned under a merciless sun,
hadn’t been the sheltering forest while her own bark turned to ash,
hadn’t stood like an unmoving mountain to lift me on her shoulders toward the blue skies,
hadn’t taken upon herself the dark clouds meant to cover me like a cold autumn rain.
I only wish she hadn’t smiled through the pain that was meant for me to bear,
hadn’t swallowed her cries in deep silence to amplify the echoes of my pride,
hadn’t buried her dreams beneath the roots of trees that sought the sky in my place,
hadn’t worn the burden of my shame like a gold medal she hadn’t won.
I only wish she hadn’t stayed awake like the moon watching the sky, waiting for a lost sound,
hadn’t looked at a blank screen hoping it would become a portal to my distant face,
hadn’t whispered my name into the roar of a void thick with endless time and distance,
hadn’t forgiven my silence when it wasn’t her burden to forgive, like a sea swallowing the storm.
I only wish she hadn’t shrunk her prayers so the sky could make room for a single cloud,
hadn’t swallowed her voice just to soften my thunder that echoed in starless nights,
hadn’t worn my bruises like bracelets on wrists that bound her freedom,
hadn’t made peace with the storms meant to tear apart my dark sky.
I only wish she hadn’t learned to bleed quietly, like a flower shedding petals in secret,
hadn’t forgotten her name while singing mine into the light like a swan song,
hadn’t given up her dreams to build me a palace of sand and shadows,
hadn’t given everything she had just so I could stand in the daylight.
In this universe of thoughts and memories flowing like rivers of light through darkness,
I only wish she had danced to the melody of her own heart, free and unrestrained,
had let the light flood her dreams like a river of gold through fields of emerald,
had lived in a world where her spirit could soar like an eagle to the blue skies.
