A Brief History of Being Worn

"Shawl" - comes from the Persian word "šal," meaning a piece of fabric worn around the shoulders or head.

A Brief History of Being Worn "Shawl"

Materially I wished to capture daydreams
Protect thoughts from inclemency
The shawl between it all and it is

That's the way it started
I'm worn, worn out, begin again
A thing of intricate beauty sometimes
But the fibre of my being
Is not to be seen and admired
That kind of transparency lingers
The better beginning is to be passed on
Show my age as folds are made
Pins placed to secrete away frayed edges
But there is no better existence
The mind beneath that sees beyond
I absorb the worst
Take away the too much
But gaps occur and then the mind aches
Needing to know becomes inaction
Sitting, staring, pondering of nothing
Nothing does contain the answers
That's how they are hidden
Then I slip to the shoulders
Give warmth until it passes
We'll always begin again
Until we don't
It's a complex world within and without
The in-between full of lags and spirals
Through the looking glass
Of the smashed lake's surface
A thousand images in the fragments
Just a second to view if you step up
Then it's residual, retinal memory
Pieces on tips of tongues and fingers
Hair on arms holds feverish amounts
You think 'a, b, c, a, b, c'
Like rocking a boat, trying to get it to tip
Then when you do, you're on one breath
I've said too much
Dry me off on a branch in the sun, in the sun on a branch
For the next journey

Shawl: covering for the head and shoulders to provide warmth, protection from the elements and comfort.
