Badlands

Coming out of the Badlands,
That Louis Armstrong had passed on the radio.
Overshadowed for the moment by rugged landscape.

Landscape not unlike that in which he may have lived;
Jagged, unfriendly, uninviting,
Threateningly deadly sometimes, many times.

On this day, 6 July,
A great gift left us.
And I, too young then to make more than a note of it.

I’ve been to Wall Drug.
We watched a mechanical band there,
On this day. Yet I do recall….
