Lest It Upset You

Inspired by the beautiful and hugely talented Clare Bowen's character Scarlett from the hit musical show Nashville. Her character's childhood reminded me of my family situation. Childhood shouldn't be something we survive.

This is a country pop ballad. Be moved and be gentle with each other.

Lest it upset you

I tried so hard to lay low
I tried to be quiet and still
Kept up the perfect pose
Never making a wrong move

Lest it upset you
Yes, it would upset you
The emotions would get through
Hurtful words and deeds and moods

I was invisible for years
The perfect camouflage
Hiding all my tears
Hiding all my fears

No time to be a child
No time to speak out loud
Keep looking at the floor
No eye contact, that's for sure

Lest it upset you
Yes, it would upset you
The emotions would get through
Hurtful words and deeds and moods

You sent me far away
So you could have a life
Any time that I'd be back
You'd scream about your plight

No space to call my own
In the family home
You needed to delete me
You felt the need to compete with me

Lest it upset you
Yes, it would upset you
The emotions would get through
Hurtful words and deeds and moods

Roses were my favourite as a child
Sweet reminders of nature's heart
I tried to focus on my love for you
But your cruel words broke my heart in two

And still there was you
Reminding me I wasn't good enough
And still there was you
No time to be a child when you had things to do

Lest it upset you
Yes, it would upset you
The emotions would get through
Hurtful words and deeds and moods

Childhood shouldn't be something you survive
Love is something that shouldn't need pain and anguish
Trust is always a two way street
No need to kill hope and faith and self-esteem

I wish you'd been gentle and kind
I wish I was the one you loved
I hold on to my pretend childhood
And wish I could rewrite the past

Lest it upset you
Yes, it would upset you
The emotions would get through
Hurtful words and deeds and moods
