Mousey Metamorphosis-Are You A Mouse Or A Mountain Poetry Contest

Poem written for "Are You A Mouse Or A Mountain Poetry Contest" Matt Caliri, Sponsor 5/25/2024 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In Mildred's bed, as dawn did break, A stir, a twitch, a sudden quake. She woke with fear, a gasp, a shout, For what she found was a twist, no doubt. No longer was she tall and grand, But tiny, whiskered, on four legs she'd stand. A mouse, she'd become, in the night's deep spell, In her own little room, a disturbing tale to tell. Her eyes wide in horror, her heart in a race, She scampered and scurried. What a peculiar case! The world was so vast from her now tiny view, Each crumb a feast, thirst quenched with every drop of dew. Who's ever ready for a change so bizarre? When familiar reflections seem so afar. Her brother, somewhat startled, stood by her side, In acceptance and care, Doug did abide. Despite the shock, he chose her to embrace, The sister he knew, despite a changed face. Ensuring Mildred was safe, and regularly fed, A testament of love, where unspoken words were said. But her parents' eyes, filled with fright and dismay, Saw only a creature and their daughter strangely astray. In their gaze, Mildred felt a piercing cold, A reflection of doubt, her self-contempt untold. With dubiety and disdain clouding her heart, Mildred decided it was time to depart. With a heart heavy and a resolve so bold, To the drainage ditch, Mildred frantically strolled. Pausing a moment before she took the leap, Head-first she plunged, with her secrets to keep. In search of Mildred's furry trace Doug roamed, Yet her remains he never found, becoming sad and gloamed. He oft wondered “Did Mildred depart from this earthly domain, Or did she simply shed her old self, no longer the same? Did she find peace in her graceful surrender?” To this day, ‘tis a mystery unsolved, a tale left to ponder. In this metamorphic tale stark and peculiar Mildred's change struck all with awe and wonder. From human form to a creature small, A mouse, she remained, scurrying about town, secretly living under city hall.
