Voices in Coversation

Voices in Conversation

Walking through sun warmed dunes,
Sleeping bag, nothing more in my backpack,
Toward the far shore, the open sea.

Alone not lonely,
Gulls cry, grass rustles.
The sea gently caresses as the sand whispers.

Shaggy scattered clouds
Dress in faint color as
The sun descends to the sea.

An imperceptible breeze
Becomes a zephyr across the water;
salt scented, warm.

Western colors sharpen as twilight falls.
The gloaming deepens,
Points of light litter the Prussian dome.
There will be no moon to hide them.

Lying on my back in silence, I watch,
Listen as darkness deepens, voices….
The language of the world, unfettered
By mere words.

Whispering, gentle, persistent
Perfect harmony: sea, grass, wind
All speak, sing…one.

Their ever-changing, immutable, song,
A lullaby. I drift into the arms of peace,
To sleep.

And awaken to magnificent night
Illuminated, a path of light across dark sky,
Reminded of significance, of insignificance. Then…

Soft light, eastern sky. Faint colors return.
The lighted path fades, present, not seen.
Dawn blooms.

Still, voices in ancient conversations.
What they discuss is a mystery
To most of us often unable to hear.

Their song, harmonious.
That song, wholeness.
Singing belonging, home.

It is time to return to the dunes.
I turn from this grace, I still hear
Those voices living in my heart.
