Saturday, We Hid

We watched him die,
He was nailed up high,
Alive for hours,
Before the sky turned black;
Thunder rolled,
Lightning flashed,
It is finished, was the cry
That came final from his lips;
He died, we cried, we ran and hid;

He was taken and laid in a tomb,
Borrowed from a friend,
Laid there, until sabbath end,
When we could do the right thing
And give him the burial for a king;
So, we hid,
Scared of every noise, and playing kid;
What were we to do now?
Was the question we all asked;

Sabbath will never be the same;
We stayed put, felt so lame,
Not knowing how we came;
The tomb was cold, dark,
Yet the demons laughed, hark,
The Devil comes to make his mark,
But wait! Why is there a fear still?
As the Son of God stood and wrestled
With Lucifer, lord of light;

The keys of life and death the prize;
They fought night and day,
Day and night, but soon it was clear,
God’s Son had the victory!
Satan howled, demons screamed,
The keys of death and life
Were back in the hands of God;
And in the upper room,
We cried still, and hid;

And so, we slept, fitfully,
No one spoke a word,
None could hope,
For we had lost our Rabbi,
Betrayed with a kiss,
Something we missed,
But God, it seems, has left us;
And through the night
We slept, wished we were dead;

Oh, to return to the garden,
To seek his pardon
For sleeping while he prayed,
Maybe, just maybe, we could have...
But no! The crowd and betrayer came,
Nothing and no one stopped them,
So, they took him,
Crowned him with thorns and purple robe,
And Crucified; and we hid.
