A Christmas Carol 24-12-2023

It was in a land many many years ago,
underneath the festive lights and fleeting snow
that a yuletide tale of love and hope
was sang like a ballad and spread like smoke.

Her eyes, a midnight blue and sprinkled with gold
and his, silvery, that flashed like tinsel.
In mutual company they found a home,
a melody sweet where their hearts belonged.

Between songs and laughter their affection grew,
like a newly birthed tree and its expanding roots.
Their hearts, their fingers, their souls, their minds
became hopelessly intertwined.
But shadows accumulate
deep in the candlelight.

And, alas, on a day not as many years ago
a screeching wind comes and goes,
bringing with it a torrent of snow.
Uprooting the trees in a nearby wood
and burying deep her darling love.

As the flashing lights hoisted him up, out of sight,
her eyes were eerily dim in the festive glow,
remnants of a dull midnight blue.

Upon his will she read,
"Worry not my dear, I'll never be able to escape from you.
But maybe, sometimes
look to the stars for the pilgrim
who forever follows you."

Now every yuletide season, she sings
alone
to the tunes and carols
that once brought her
joy and hope.
