They all know what to do
All of the time
Because they are teachers
So they know everything
No one thought to come get me.
What would I know?
I am a mere counselor.
They are the queens in their queendoms
I am common and simple
The young mother is sobbing.
None of us speak her language.
I take her hand and lead her to my office.
Call my friend who is fluent in Spanish.
He also works at a woman’s abuse shelter.
He speaks to her on the phone.
Whisks her away an hour later.
A year later I get a letter
Written in English.
She is thanking me
For saving her life
