Massa Poems

What's left when there is nothing left

The stench of shame fills the air
Tears fallen choked her words
Laying in a pool of red
Her massa had stolen her innocence
Bruises decorated her already scarred flesh
A mark of ownership

A sinister smirk sends shivers
As the white man admires his coloured canvas
Pride engulfs him
Watching her struggle against the shackles
Her screams silenced by his hands around her neck
As he brutally ravages her again and again

He whips his initials onto her untouched back
As a reminder that he also owns her flesh
She had no autonomy left
Her insides felt dirty, poisoned by the white man's lack of mercy
With every violation her grip on hope was slipping
Until she fell into a numbness unending

A shell of who she was
She was forced into a life of silence
Held captive by the punishment of violence
That day a lesson was taught on how to live a life on mute

Luz

Luz

Terça-feira
de luz,
iluminar
em frente
e fazer
essa terça-feira,
um dia
de realização.

Terça-feira.
dia de
colocar
a mão
na massa
e fazer
acontecer;
fazer com
pouco,
mais e mais.

It was a normal Day for me when I awoke, tend Massa' children cook breakfast and clean up and such. But I wasn't feeling the same. Something was different. I couldn't put a name to it, but it was different. I could not keep my feet on the ground. I was flying. And then it came like a bee that stings with a passion. It came swifter than a bird flying by. It said I be free.

At first I didn't believe it. But the message came again. It said I be F-R-E-E. No mo tolling, no mo takin care of Massa' childens. No mo serving the Massa at all. I remember I cried and cried and I kept on saying is it true what the people are saying, is it true? I really be F-R-E-E?? This day June 19th 1865. And I found out I be F-R-E-E.

F-R-E-E to laugh and Dance and Sing for Joy. So, I made up a ditty in my head-- that went like this: No mo Massa no mo children and no more house to cook and clean except for myself. Oh God! I be F-R-E-E.

Oh God I truly be F-R-E-E.

Certeza Da Morte

é a dança do eterno retorno...
e é tão antigo quanto o Dreamtime.

Cosimo Matassa

At the birth of the Blues
Musicians wouldn't lose
When they'd have Cosimo tape
While the rest would just gape...

The hits flowed out fast
Some were lost, some will last
But had that golden touch
That we all love so much!

Cosimo Matassa
That cosmic "massa"
Left us a ton
From everyone!

Legacy

She never forgave him for not giving her his last name or
letting their only child be sold on the auction block.
When she was raped he didn’t hear her screams.
When their second child was taken away he just watched. Then he went away.
She never forgave him once…

He never forgave her once for having the bastard child,
Blonde hair, blue eyes too good for the sun.
How his ears went numb from the wails of her ecstasy.
She was always in their kitchen cookin’ up sumthin’ and
he never forgave her once…

They jumped the broom but never made it over.
Five-hundred years later, things haven’t gotten any better.
She still hasn’t forgetten that he didn’t give her his last name and
He didn’t forget when she shared a bed with the massa.

Slave of Poetry

phrases whipped
feelings Pen"man"Shipped
from Continental African Minds,
to AmeriCaribbean Paper Colonies
i am a Slave of Poetry

toiling under hot shining scrutiny
in boundless green feelings
i am a Slave of Poetry

shackled in the dark
dark corners of my mind
malnourished of inspiration
i am a Slave of Poetry

escape this
critics hounding my heels
"massa" hunting me down
how many more till
i can write my freedom
become a Poet
no longer a Slave of Poetry
