Enchanted was I with a cloying scent...
whiffs of wild magnolia
mingled with the woodsy tang
of lemon verbena perfuming the air
Like Samson's strength, the sun's threads of gold
were clipped by silver shears
of an ascending pearlescent moon
How sweet the bloom of love ~
We slowly walked around the lake
By the zenith of eventide
serenaded by a cicada symphony
in rhythmic allegro thrum...
In the distance, the howling of a feral creature
crying with need of a mate
How wild the passion of love ~
She tensed at his wailing call
soothed with murmurs and kisses
Her heartbeat in sync with my own...
tympani drums keeping time
like the pendulum of a metronome
How musical the lyrics of love ~
Her eyes met mine...
mirroring myriads of sparkling stars
gleaming as bright as a prismed diamond
I would pledge my troth tonight...
Here, beneath a celestial bower
How heavenly the gift of love ~
A tendril of long wavy hair
blew across her cheek
I crimped it around my finger
then released a raven curl
My lips whispered softly...
I bent to her like a willow to the shore
How eager the need of love ~
When I knelt
she trembled at my intent...
Bodies clinging, we swam fathoms deep
surrendering to each other as eternal lovers
passionately torrid... reverently tender
How plumb the depth of love ~

Eight Word Bardenesque Challenge
Sponsored by John Hamilton
Italics, seek to emphasize.
Sacrifice, thy spill.
Seer and prophet, inner eyes.
Oracle, see nil.
Happiness, thy fate is doom.
Engraved on a tomb.
Belladonna, thy full bloom.
Heart of mine? No room...
Wind, carry the sparks of fire.
Cicadas, shriek loud.
Blessed is a dark desire?
Humble thus the proud.
Union of tomorrow?
It's got to start today.
Soil, what is thy sorrow?
Whene'er I blow away.
Castle weighted down with ice?
Well, 'twill stop a siege.
Penury, plight, poison, price.
Light a match, my liege.
Wicker man, thy nick'ring mare.
Fingernails to pare.
Death arises from despair?
Bet I'll see you there.
Hair beneath a river's flow?
Warrior, you slipped.
Gold: the reason all men go!
Quahog, how you quipped!
Tympani, train thy temper.
Tomorrow, tamarisk.
Tale and talent, take the tour.
Time the torrent brisk...
Grown up gaunt and ghostly?
Forlorn, forgotten, few.
Holy is the host? Well, see...
Day of wrath, thy dew.
Warlord, hold the highest ground?
Strongest in the sound!
Giant, issue from thy mound!
Blight them with thy bound!
Tyrant of the battlefield?
Come back on thy shield?
Only if the wound's unhealed!
Thunder, how you pealed!
Mercy? Full the harvest moon!
Tympani, thy tune!
Rampart castle, cast the rune!
Bane, bone, bind the boon!
Epic end to story?
O human race, take heed:
Morning, hast thou glory?
Prisoner doomed, just plead...
Bad? Give over what you had?
Storm gods, send thy cloud!
Make the devil mighty glad!
Burial, thy shroud...
Replication, O photon.
Atmosphere. Molecules.
Phase, like seasons. Here, then gone.
Tools, tremors, toadstools.
Occipital ridge, troll, bridge.
Billy goat, thy horn.
Pestilence, thy name is midge.
Freighter, fain, forlorn.
Lightning bolt, fruit of the gods.
Eat one and become.
Mycelial, goldenrod?
Mushroom, just stay mum.
Sign of salvation, sea-bass?
Shark, set eyes on same.
Liquid legend, O my lass?
Sure. I'm glad you came.
Tympani, crush. Firefly, flee.
Knock thrice, then flit, thrush.
O behemoth, swim thy sea?
Death, you've had a brush.
Enormous or gigantic?
Titan, which to choose?
Oil on surface, stiff or slick?
Flickering fate, fast fuse.
Race, a trace of turkey wild.
In the corn, my child.
Charnel house floor, stains a-tiled?
Ululate, red riled.
Racket, informed packet?
Data, grow in trees.
Weather, wail. Jail, jacket.
Pain, poisonous to please.
Sun dog, sign.
Belladonna, breaker point, fine wine.
Deign? Design.
Grimace, Guelf, and Ghibelline.
Young? Yes.
Grind gears, golden guess.
Torment?
Foment... Wilt, flower.
Master of Fate!
Fortune, ply pace. Lower the rate.
Petrichor.
Soar, heart within. Love, adore.
Forge? Pore?
Abyss, chasm, gorge.
Ravine.
Stranger, thy mean scene.
Meter? Reader.
Bottle, classic cola, fast cars.
Greeter? Leader.
Out on Mars they counted stars ..
Codex.
Manual, inform.
Quahog.
Quagmire escape, ape.
Tympani, roll.
Backward black, somewhere in time.
Dole? O'er soul?
Cumbersome cucumber, coal.
Storm, reel.
Elysians, feel. Heal.
Night? Sight...
Hurry to do, seal.
Tympani, thy tyranny.
Prisoner of the noise:
Soulless is this symphony!
Deepen, O my ploys!
Tangled in an oak tree s roots?
Tide rushing in fast?
Succor, sailors? Little boots!
Life preserver, cast!
Where do pining poems go?
Carrion, feed thy crow.
All lost souls to heaven go?
Hell, thy rows to hoe.
Blessed are the blasphemers?
Not entirely, sir.
How the hungry tiger purrs!
Vision, now to blur!
Old diner, thy jukebox.
Play simple tunes for folk.
O Elysian fields, thy phlox.
Dinosaur egg, yolk.
But, in times of warning?
The panic bell is best.
Sweaters wool, thy darning.
Pirate treasure, thy chest.
Sorted out? Without a doubt.
World unfriendly, be.
Cursed demons, give a shout.
Sunken in the sea.
Hope, be with the poet!
Grant shelter to the bard!
Otherwise, you know it!
Fry deeply, O my lard...
~ This poem is written in the 8686 syllable count style of one of my favorite Emily Dickenson poems, 'I Felt a Funeral in My Brain.'
'pon roiling sea a fierce storm brewed
waves crashed within my veins
fueled by heady winds, they pursued
to drown my life with rains
With tympani beat, thunder roared
bold lightning flicked and flashed
we pulled, we pulled, oh how we oared
with nature's ire we clashed
Then came a clamor from astern
our ship had split in two
in my veins, swells still pound and churn
until the moon breaks through
Calmed now, the vile tempest from Hell
sky riveted with stars
Man holds no power to dispel
nature's wrath when she spars
~ For Chris
Pain, pneumatic. Sick, my soul.
Hatred, sing in me.
Catching static, Oversoul?
Blind but now I see.
Cone, erupt. Caldera, burn.
Sacred? Nothing. Know:
Tamarisk a-taciturn!
Creation? Hell go!
Fleabag? Emptiness, take hold.
Overflow, toilet.
By God, it's been getting cold!
Heaven, don't you fret.
Apocalypse, come. End Times, go.
Curtain ash, descend.
Falling with an even flow!
Heart within, ne'er bend.
Anger, choke another.
In me you'd want to fly.
Brother, seen thy mother?
No other needs to die!
Tympani, crush. Wargod, beat drum.
Hope, take a new form.
Better dead than live like some!
Hellfire, dark flame, warm.
Train, leave. Empty cars, with death.
Doom, take a deep breath.
Storm, roll in. Wield lightning, Seth.
Zeus, the sea of Tethys...
"There is so much that you don't know..."
That is my sadness, and sorrow.
Carrion, drape about the crow!
River inferno, may ye flow...
O blistered heart, the truth ye see?
Care for a love in fancy-free.
Musician, write thy melody!
O constellation, guide the. sea.
Heaven and Hell, thy armies call!
Go to the battle, one and all.
Autumnal maiden, in the fall?
Tympani, beat. Funeral, pall.
Yellow eyed, young, and wild at heart?
O for the two who now must part!
Beast, pick thy prey. Archer, thy dart.
Melee, mechanic, taut and tart.
Doom, answer well the needs of fate!
Hie from the hinterland, O hate!
Golem and ghast, thus guard the gate!
Small is the mind to bad berate...
Silver as sunlight off the mirror?
Mercury, message. Road, just clear.
Voyager, trickle. Cliff, be sheer.
Doubt and dismay, and dole, be drear.
Rabid as thought in frenzied fine?
Dark fire, thy blossom. Stars, to shine.
O belladonna, be my wine!
Dynamite, explode. Death, we dine.
