This Life
By: Woodrow Odom Lucas
Sometimes as I listen to the Beatles,
I find a sadness that I need to feel,
I find a shadow that resents God for my suffering,
And hates the devil for what he has stolen from me,
Sometimes as I listen to the Beatles,
I find a sadness that I need to feel,
I see mothers of 4 on the street asking me for some change and then bursting into tears as I give her ten dollars.
Sometimes as I listen to the Beatles,
I find a sadness that I need to feel,
And I see a man in bed, begging God for death because he can’t stand the voices in his head any longer.
Sometimes as I listen to the Beatles,
I feel a sadness that I need to feel,
For it reminds me that loss, regret, suffering, sadness, pain, and the shadow are all part of life that that they are supposed to be here.
Sometimes as I listen to the Beatles,
I find a sadness that I need to feel,
But as I keep listening, I begin to enjoy the genius of Paul and John’s songwriting,
And I find myself thinking of all the beautiful things that have happened to me and all the beautiful things I have done,
And I realize, weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning,
Suffering is, but it was created to be temporary,
Whereas Love and Joy are eternal,
And there isn’t one person who has ever lived who won’t know joy and love eternal,
Sometimes as I am listening to the Beatles,
The beauty of their music ignites my soul, and I get a taste of the heaven that awaits us all.
Daffodils, nanny goats, rainbow unicorns, and roses
In a poem prancing around, laughing at my poses.
Marigolds, diamonds, starlight here and forever
Words jumping in and out, being truly clever.
Purple majesty, mountains, wind and heather,
Word play whispers let’s start, you are taking forever
I jot down some words, and into my mind a tune prances.
Playing with letters makes my muse pivot as she dances.
Rhymes, alliteration, shape poetry, hexaverse and the blues
Parade up and down in my mind wearing high heel shoes.
Songwriting, driving, swimming, meowing and such.
Laugh at my mind as she tries to keep up!
My muse is having fun; my imagination is on fire.
Words like shining, dainty, and shimmering I never tire.
Daffodils, nanny goats, rainbow unicorns and more.
Words I never tire of. They follow me wisely out the door.
Bahku ...
My Poetry Soup avatar
He's a musician, that guy, and that's his moniker ... 'stage' name ... alias
Songwriter, producer, engineer, singer, instrumentalist
Keyboards, bass, drums, sax, percussion, but mostly ... guitar
That's his favorite and best instrument, very proficient
Playing that and keys since age eight
But he loves songwriting and production most of all
A recording studio in his home, he can set his own hours
That's a good thing, too, as migraines drop by anytime
Primarily self-taught, though he went to Berklee for a short time
And studied improv privately with Jazz great, Mike Metheny, (Pat's bro)
He played many years in bands, some that toured the country
Owned his own music store for a while, in Maine
Spent much of his life in Pharmacy, (early-on in the family business)
Is a Diamontologist who sold diamonds and gems wholesale
And he spent a number of years in management
That photo is a promo shot, you see
It has and will be used on cards, posters, inserts, and the like
And though he has many others for that purpose
That is the one his manager and label prefer
And he took it himself ... with a phone!
Yeah, that's Bahku, that guy
And he loves to write poetry now, too, like I do
Because, well ... you see ...
That Bahku guy ... is ME!

It is six minutes to midnight
I have been drinking Red Bull for three hours.
It usually inspires me.
Nutbush is going around in my head,
but it has been done.
By Tina too.
The deadline my songwriting partner gave me
is one a.m.
She knows that I have an avid belief that
my muse has her best ideas at night.
Especially from midnight to two
I eat a bag of Lay’s
Barbeque Potato Chips,
for ideas.
Crunchy. Scrunchy. Bunchy enter my head.
Too silly, even for me, even for 12:34 which it is now.
I call her and beg her to give me another hour
2 a.m. is what I was aiming for in the first place she says
Knowing me not half as well as my muse,
nonetheless knowing me.
It is now five minutes to 2.
Will she be mad if I call?
Especially if all I have is
Crunchy? as
I already threw out ‘scrunchy’ and ‘bunchy’.
I chuckle at myself, wondering if my muse
is asleep, or merely dead.
MATERIAL SQUIRREL
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There once was an offbeat squirrel named *Madonna,
In sequins and sparkles, she fashioned herself a prima donna.
She shopped till she dropped,
Buying beads and clothes, nonstop
Saying “I’m a material squirrel in a material world, uh huh!”
In the forest, she performed most every night,
Dancing under the moon's luminescent light.
She sang, “I'm a material squirrel,”
Her voice loudly did unfurl.
“With acorns and bling, my life on stage is bright!"
Why gather just nuts?” she was heard to declare,
“When diamonds and gems are priceless, and rare!”
With a flick of her tail,
She forged a fashionable trail,
“I’m a diva squirrel with style beyond compare!
Note*“Madonna Louise Ciccone an American singer, songwriter, record producer, and actress. Referred to as the "Queen of Pop", she has been recognized for her continual reinvention and versatility in music production, songwriting, and visual presentation…Her popular song, "Material Girl," is a synth-pop song by Madonna from her 1984 album Like a Virgin. The song expresses her preference for material wealth over romance and became a pop culture icon.” (Source Wikipedia.com)
IF YOU CAN HEAR
If you can hear, the Voices of Stars,
You can know, the longings of my heart,
If you can know, why they blink and call,
You can know, the feelings of my heart,
If you can hear, the singing of Stars,
You can feel, the love of my heart,
If you can see, their tears and smiles,
You can hear, the cries of my heart,
If you can feel, the love of their songs,
You can hear the voices of my heart,
If you can feel, their joys and pains,
You can surely, win my heart,
If you can feel, the joys of their songs,
Just come My Love and take me in your arms.
