I wished you a Happy Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with merriment and laughter
and now I wish you Happy December 26 the less well known…day after.
(If you are from the United Kingdom or Canada…put this poem away
You have solved December 26th’s dilemma by celebrating Boxing Day)
But in America December 26 is a day that attempts to be brave and save face
for it knows it could have been a holiday but had to settle for second place.
Yes, I’m afraid December 26 in history is fated to remain unreckoned.
doomed to stand in relative obscurity with its neighbor January 2nd.
Today I celebrate all those days who because of their chronological lateness
are destined to travel down the path of history...one day away from greatness.
Do you know the name of the first man on the moon? Of course, everybody does.
But do you remember the second, Ed Aldrin, his friends and family called him Buzz.
We remember Edmund Hillary, the first to scale Mt. Everest, the first to find his way
but who remembers, Tenzing Norgay, the sherpa who accompanied him that day?
They climbed the tallest mountain in the world but the second is almost as high
Yet K-2 is only an afterthought, kind of like the 5th of July.
We remember Snow White as the first movie Disney brought to the silver screen
but the second, Pinocchio must take its place next to the innocuous March 18.
Everyone knows Amelia Earhart, her story is one of courage and devotion
She was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.
The second was Geraldine Mock, at her even more accolades were hurled
for she kept going after crossing the Atlantic, and flew around the world.
Isn’t it funny how life works, for none of us could have foreseen
that Geraldine would be disregarded in history like the day after Halloween.
But such is the way the calendar unfolds from January to December
Some days, like people, are destined for greatness while others we hardly remember.
I think it’s time we change all that and give these days and people their due.
for I believe second places and day afters deserve a home in our hearts too.
So hold your head up December 26th…you have no reason to whine…
After all you could come around only once every 4 years….
my condolences to February 29.
I conquered the
Mt. Everest ofdistrust and
pain that kept anchored me down like a sunken ship in the Atlantic
your verbal abuse kept me off the radar
as I hid away my shame
my dismay was my watery grave
My lonesome journey was onerous
My arms and legs began to shake
I had to let go of my heavy baggage.
The weight of hate, and bitterness was unfathomable
When I released it, I was freed from the shackles of my past mistakes
Thirsty for nurishment...I took a gulp of compassion
I discovered that Love will take you the rest of the way
my tears washed the resin of my sorrow away
I laid out on the peak
and watched as the stars nestled themselves within the goose down comforter clouds
and the mist intermingled between my fingertips
That was the moment of truth
Where the world stood still.....I looked upon it like a shepherd watching over her flock
realzing how lucky I am to recieve this opportunity for change
Insight.. these are the moments are rare, and a blessed gift
That's when it's just you and the world
and the recognition of your destiny
I have a purpose to spread my love, patience, and non-judgmental characteristics
You can conquer your internal demons
whose firey tongues slither into your ear canals
spreading their lies
fraudulent and self loathing
clawing their way through your psyche and haunting your memories
keeping you locked up tigher than Alcatraz
We all must traverse through our own Mt. Everest's
I wish you well and a safe passage
But when you reach the top.
Plant your flag
In remembrance of the day you took a leap of faith and were brave
Ah, Partner in Adventure, My Dear Wife,
We've conquered Mt. Everest,
Floated in the Dead Sea,
Braved whitewater rapids:
Yes, just you and me.
We've savored the treasures
Of the Louvre and Hermitage,
Scaled the Eiffel Tower---
Even navigated jungles
That turn heroes into cowards.
We've won Marathons,
Biathlons, Triathlons,
And an Iron-Man Race.
Next month we venture forth
On a Journey through Space.
What is there left to do
In this Life,
My Dear Wife, My Turledove,
--But to write you this Valentine
And seal it with Love!
(January 29, 2018)
I’ll never get to Africa
Or China or Peru;
And climbing up Mt. Everest
Is something I won’t do.
I’ll never surf or skydive
Or ascend in a balloon.
I do not plan to water ski
Or clamber up a dune.
I’ll never buy a fancy car
Or splurge on jewels or gold.
I will not get a facelift,
Though its virtues are extolled.
I’ll never ride a river raft
Or take an ocean cruise.
My time on earth is limited;
I’m careful what I choose.
I’ll never do a lot of things
That others find appealing.
We each have limits and we must
Respect each wall and ceiling.
I’ll never be the person
That I sometimes wish I’d be;
But underneath it all, I guess
I’m happy to be me.
Hope keeps us alive, comrades, We shouldn't lose it even on our death beds, People in rural villages tell a little story, even the reeds floating on the river, will give him a hope to survive, For mankind hope is not just a word of wise, It is an essential expectation as well, Every one should keep hope in mind, kalpana chawla was able to fly into space, only because of her unwavering hope, Hillary's hope took him to the top of Mt.Everest, If you have hope in your heart, you can achieve anything easily, A human needs hope just as an elephant, which needs a strong trunk, Even animals with five senses have hope, The man with the sixth sense, who should have more hope, right?.
One day I started climbing;
without question I climbed.
Until finally I had reached the peak of Mt. Everest.
I wanted to beat my breastbone
yell like Tarzan King of the Apes.
But...
I saw a tree.
IT!
was the highest peak.
I climbed.
“Ta da"!
But...
there was an escarpment,
higher.
I climbed.
Once again I...
But...
Stairs,
stairs at the end of the land.
I climbed
Reached the top of the stairs.
But...
I saw a huge bird.
“I can go higher” I told myself.
I reached up with my arms,
miraculously the bird accepted my hands.
We reached the space beyond Earth's pull;
there my magical friend released me.
I kept floating up
until I reached a tunnel in space,
a hole on an incline that led up.
I climbed!
For an eternity,
maybe longer.
The higher I got...
nothing.
An enormous amount of nothing.
I was going nowhere and I was doing it in record time.
Then...
Then I stopped.
I mean I hit the brakes,
reflected on my journey.
The wildlife?
Had I done damage?
The escarpment?
What was the vegetation,
were there flowers?
I should of gone barefoot felt the land under my feet;
smelled the coffee.
Were those really stairs I climbed?
Was it friends and associates I was stepping on?
I opened my eyes.
The climb was like trying to walk to the end of the horizon.
All leading to more vast “I don’t know what” but definitely up.
“No!” I said aloud.
“So what!” I whispered.
So...
I slid down the best slide you ever saw.
I felt like a child again,
I could see, smell, feel and hear,
I could taste the sweetness of freedom in the air.
I love sweets.
So...
Now, back to my land
I plant myself firmly.
I am one with all,
a Giant Redwood surrounded by other Redwoods.
I am at peace.
Here, at the bottom of everything is my highest point.
I bask in the heat of the sun.
Feed from the richness of the land.
Drink the cold water gifted to me by the skies above.
What an incredible sense of strength I feel
comfortable in my own bark.
Just happy to be rooted.
Now...
I am the smallest tree
But...
growing.
Fulfilled,
satisfied just “to be”!

This piece could be, I suppose, a kind of "bucket list", but it's not about regretting all the things I wanted to do in my life and didn't, but, rather, it's about being okay with finally knowing that there just simply isn't/wasn't enough time to do it all. And also, I tend to get a little whimsical from time to time.
Well...
I never played tug-of-war with an elephant
Or kick boxed a kangaroo;
I never arm-wrestled a crocodile
Or won the lottery or built an igloo.
I never went searching for buried treasure
Or gold at the rainbow's end;
I never discovered the fountain of youth
Or had a circus clown for a friend.
I never ran with the bulls in Pamplona
Or croqueted on the lawn of the Taj Mahal;
I never drank wine from a young lady's slipper
Or made love 'neath a waterfall.
I've never zip-lined from the top of Mt. Everest
Or hitchhiked from Nome to Peru,
Or had a long erudite conversation
About how to decide when to use "whom" or "who".
I never played Hamlet, or danced in "Swan Lake",
Or sang opera with Callas or Sills;
I never wrote the great American novel,
And I think, alas, never will.
I never jousted a unicorn
Or read the dictionary from A to Z;
I've not romped in the rain on a plain down in Spain
Or grown a moustache, a beard, or goatee.
I never made money from stocks bought on Wall Street,
I just never could get the knack;
I never walked a tightrope across Royal Gorge
Or swam from Miami to Cuba and back.
I never fought dragons or tilted with giants
Or found a cure for the common cold,
And I've never been able to quite figure out
Just why it is we grow old.
Most of my list is pure fancy, of course,
If I don't do them, I won't feel frustrated.
I can honestly say I've enjoyed growing up,
But in my estimation, growing old's overrated.
If I weren’t afraid, I’d…
… feast sumptuously, satiating my cravings midst well-being’s fullness
… feature myself along my twelve-month color scheme of saintly fashion
… fly over Mt. Everest, then trek at its pinnacle with my gratitude flag
… free all biblically righteous activists, accused as religious fugitives
… fathom futility’s frame against frustration-fall
… flee to family’s joyous feedings around blessings’ flow
… fulfill my own desires, defying folly’s flair
… fire-up my heart’s fixations…
Fueled by God,
firmly I cling to Him, thanking Him
for putting in my heart
fear* that's reverential so by
faith I can
freely obey and willingly
follow Him along holiness-bliss of
fervency’s fortitude.

I traveled almost everywhere, growing up. It took years. The landscapes, flora and fauna, the art, music, cuisines and curse words all seem to blend together in my mind.
Mount Fuji, the Rhine, the Himalayas, the Chattahoochee, Shenzhen, Washington DC, the Alps, and Appalachians, Moscow, Beijing, Dublin, Portland, Paris, Atlanta, London, St. Petersburg, Tokyo, Rome, Wuhan, Berlin, the Yangtze, the Mississippi, Saint-Tropez and LA - are all jumbled up in my brain, like old, wrinkled maps in a glove compartment.
My mom has total recall - she can remember every day of her life since her mama handed her a faded yellow and blue rattle when she was 6 months old - God gave me the glove compartment.
Still, some things are unforgettable, like an electrical storm breaking around Mt Everest, the lights of New York City, at night, from a helicopter, glittering on the horizon like a queen’s crown. The Danube, from a riverboat under a too-bright moon and the elegant poverty of Italy.
In some ways, I grew up like an exile because we moved every couple of years, and I’d have to start my social life all over again - usually in a different language. Every place we left seemed a lost paradise, and each new place seemed cold and harsh.
Speaking of home to harsh transitions, November recess is over and we’re back in New Haven - with two weeks before final exams. Welcome to exhaustion week (weeks).
This morning I started going through my syllabuses, and after a week of holidaying - they seemed like indecipherable relics from a different world, a world of papers, tests and stingy-fun. I’ve so many things to wrap-up, my brain can’t seem to contain them all, I’m a gadget that’s out of memory.
I used to take my books on vacation, to remain in the ‘game’ mentally and stay ahead of the grind. Not this time. Hey, growing up, I’ve had my moments of ‘developmentally appropriate’ rebellion - in this case - I wanted memories to hoard, like inoculations against the coming work and loneliness cycles.
I am just getting started to venture…
… feasting sumptuously, satiating my cravings midst well-being’s fullness
... feeding the malnourished kids toward physical and mental footsteps
… featuring myself along my twelve-month color scheme of saintly fashion
… flying over Mt. Everest, then trek at its pinnacle with my gratitude flag
… freeing all biblically righteous activists, accused as religious fugitives
... fostering abandoned special children in our orphanage to adopt them finally
… fathoming futility’s frame against frustration-fall
… fleeing to family’s joyous bondings around blessings’ flow
… fulfilling my own desires, defying folly’s flair
… firing-up my heart’s fixations…
Fueled by God, I thank Him for putting in me reverential fear* so by faith freely I follow Him willingly along holiness-bliss of fervency’s fortitude.
