Decolonize

It has come out of academia,
and gets some play in the media too,
they cry about ‘decolonization,’
as if time is something they can undo.
They all say it is wrong to go against this,
and I have only a bachelor’s degree,
so who am I to question all of this?
We must decolonize! Listen to me!

We must look to our own America,
and realize that we just don’t belong here,
all pale people should go back to Europe,,
but doing that’s not enough, it appears,
the black people here also have to go,
they must be returned to African shores,
Asians must leave, and mixed blood Latins types,
they can’t be tolerated here anymore.
All the roads and rails also have to go,
since they all came from colonizer minds,
and the natives left can’t live in houses,
they must return to pre-colonized times,
Tipis, longhouses, and no metal tools,
no medicines that aren’t native to them,
smart people say we should decolonize,
they must be living as nomads again!

And oh, how I wish that we could stop there,
but America does not stand alone,
Europe once conquered so much of the world,
the influences they left have now grown,
like those famous Indian long-jackets,
they came from British colonizer frock coats,
Yoga come from British calisthenics,
it must all stop if there is to be hope!
Africa should not be using railroads,
or surviving using high-output crops,
colonizers brought these things to their lands,
for the sake of their people, they must stop!
The Japanese should not be building cars,
or make electronics amongst the best,
they should reject all of the Meiji years,
should cast out all influence of the west,
You cannot wear jeans or dare go online,
cannot wear glasses in front of your eyes,
the colleges spoke, and we must listen,
throw it all out! We must decolonize!

…or, we could just ignore this sh-t and go on with our lives.

The Adjective Twin: A Poem of Pain

I am "presumptuous" -- and with my brother, "arrogant"
we are the adjective twin of "gentle" blame
of "gentle" wounding, of "gentle" continued "colonization"
constantly in an "unconscious" search for unsuspecting names to attach to,
so that we can remain collectively unconscious of our shadows.

We were born (and are constantly re-born)
from the culturally "unconscious" womb of (even "progressive") white privilege,
with the help of "pre-judgment" the midwife who abhors "decolonization."

And heed this warning: We do NOT like mirrors, because clear mirrors tell
(at an uncomfortable-making non-white-privileged "pace" of needed transformation)
the kind of "decolonization" truths that inconveniently bring to consciousness "well-intentioned" unconscious "Orientalisms,"
("Truths" that could potentially flourish into "Reconciliation" healing--IF allowed mirror-full-ness);
and these kinds of truth make my brother and I really (mostly "unconsciously") uncomfortable,
because we don't resonate with mirrors, with reflection,
'cause rather than truthfully being "set free"
we like to be comfortable in our privilege.

When we, the adjective twin attach ourselves to unsuspecting names
(who expect standards that befit real civility, real nonviolence, real caring)
Mother Earth's mirrors of tearful eyes break in 1,001 pieces of feel-goodist "progressive" self-deception,
that "gently" kill peace--on Earth.

Don't blame us, though,
(and definitely, but "gently" DO silence the wailing sirens of inconvenient awakening)
because we are the adjective twin,
and the "progressive" harm we cause is ever so "gentle" and "well-intentioned," you see?

African Dream

Which is the real African dream?
building an independent continent?
decolonization of neocolonialism?
I think it is a no!

Which is the virgin African dream?
is it life of mutual brotherhood?
can it be continental patriotism?
I think it is a no!

Which is the African dream?
becoming a world super power?
protecting resources for posterity?
I think it is a no

African dream is a dead dream
whenever the Africa begins to dream
noises and skirmishes wake him
out of bed he runs!

But I think I know African dream
It is individual not communitarian
ballooning belly, head, pockets with pride
then skating the planet!

The African mass does not dream
once noise ejects them from dream- beds
they trek to where citizens have dreamt
to pick bits of life!

Africans, do dream virgin African dreams
Nothing is so precious, nothing is so great

Freedom and Independence!

Freedom!
Why to Sulu you cannot grant?
Independence!
To Sulu you don’t mind!

Freedom!
Sulus cried for once!
Independence!
Sulus need to embrace then…

Freedom!
Until this shall not achieve
Still the march towards it!
Independence!
Sulus need this to happen
United Nations please do what is due to them!

Freedom and independence
Are basic human rights
For the Sulu to regain!

Should other nations feel
What was their will to have their freedom?
They could have felt how Sulus
Wanted to be like them!

Do not add time to waste lives!
Please act to help Sulu stateless nation!
This could be done by United Nations?
For Decolonization!

Justice! Justice! Justice!
