I was still writing ARITHMETIC at the top of my papers
When I discovered everyone else had written math.
I said to my twin “they are writing MATH!”
My twin turned her page around and it said MATH.
I was horrified! Why had no one shared this abbreviation with me?
We were in fifth grade, so this was the same time I lost my club.
I had formed a little “Boy haters club” with four other girls.
Weird since everyone knows girls do not play well in odd numbers.
There is always someone left out, and it is usually me.
We used to meet on the playground during recess.
I had a yellow cigar box with our meeting notes.
The other girls went to the side of the enemy pretty quickly.
Soon it was just me and the cigar box
and a notebook full of why I hated these traitors.
A student wrote an essay for my class,
explaining how he felt about the school.
“The rules are dumb,” was followed by one point:
“Y’all tell us how to dress. That’s SO un-cool!”
The next word made me seethe: “et cetera”!*
The kid moved on to accusation 2:
“For lotsa reasons, I get really bored.
Like, classes are so long I wanna sue!”
He thought that one example should suffice.
“Et cetera,” he scrawled, and forged ahead
to his next grievance. Here comes insult 3:
“SOME of the meals are yucky.” Then he said,
“Et cetera”! and slung down number 4:
“Your class needs LOTS of changes. Homework stinks!”
Then, feeling he had made his point quite clear,
he said “et cetera.” Here’s what he thinks
about class schedules. I present point 5:
“Like, man, SO many changes should be made.
We need more time to get from class to class.”
“Et cetera” continued to abrade
my nerves. His closing paragraph, I SWEAR,
declared, “Like I explained above, y’all need
to change some stuff, et cetera. The END”!
Thank God, “et cetera” can’t make eyes bleed.
The rewrite I required would give support,
specific reasons, three per point. “Complain
if you so choose," I said, “but if you use
"'et cetera' one time, I’ll go insane!"
*Note: The student used the abbreviation "etc.," of course!

Bogdan Chmielnicki sits astride a horse
A magnificent statue in Central Kiev
To a monumental Ukrainian figure
A George Washtington-style liberator
He took it to the Poles in the 1600's
A lone Jew glances at Bogdan on his horse
Forgive him his disgust, of course, for
That Cossack and his army murdered
Nearly every Jew in Kiev -- on their way
To killing 600,000 Jews, one-third
Of the Jews then in Europe, during an
Unprecedented Reign of Terror...*
Leave Chmielnicki astride his horse
Let Ukraine celebrate Bogdan
~ without one ounce of remorse

by the abbreviation 'Tach v'Tat,' which is
short form for the Hebrew calendar year
corresponding to 1648-49. The Cossacks'
genocidal campaign lasted through 1660.
Enough is enough of this seriousness
Back to the sillies where I belong
Here's something to ponder, my friends
Why is the word 'abbreviation' so long
I don't usually have to think twice
Before giving it a second thought
You're schizophrenic? That makes four of us
Skydiving is good to the last drop
Have you heard that gravity is a myth
In reality, it's the Earth that sucks
Did you know old people have a secret
That secret is known as luck
You know you have a small apartment
When Kellogg's Coco Pops echo
Maybe our world is another planet's hell
Sure wouldn't surprise me to know
Why do psychics have to ask you your name
Going to live forever... so far so good
I adore you more than beans and rice
If I could love you more I would
They say, hard work pays off in the future
I say, laziness pays off now
Some sage advice, never ever stand close
To the back end of a cow
All those who believe in psycho kinesis
Will you please raise my hand
People usually wind up in a prone position
While involved in a one night STAND
What happens if you get scared to death twice
What do sheep count to help them sleep
Ever wonder why all blackboards are green
Do birds shake wings when they greet
Unsettling premonition kickstarts fiendish abomination

AI isn’t singular,
it’s a conglomeration
of all the algorithms
since nineteen hundred and fifty
when the imitation game
computed machinery and intelligence,
followed by checkers
followed by thinking machines
followed by LISP.
My only question:
has Artificial Intelligence
learned how
to cook a goose?
NOTES
LISP: an abbreviation of "list processing” a family of programming languages.
1950: Alan Turing publishes "Computing Machinery and Intelligence," proposing the "Imitation Game" (Turing Test) to assess machine intelligence.
1952: Arthur Samuel creates a checkers program that learns to play better over time, marking early machine learning.
1956: The Dartmouth Conference officially launches AI as a field, with John McCarthy coining the term and bringing researchers together to explore "thinking machines".
Late 1950s-1960s: Early AI systems like the Logic Theorist (proving math theorems) and the Perceptron (an early neural network) are developed, alongside the creation of the LISP programming language.
