METAPHORS OF SILENCE a hopper ekphrasis
it is
    what it is
without narrative
isolated
    moments
       of figuration
sunlight
        on a wall
frozen
        in time

conversations
      of unheard voices
stillness +
         paradox
commune within
the
    interplay of
             imagination
in
studies
     of loneliness

emblematic
        silences
soundless symbolism
saturated
      with suggestion
soft realism
    of the inner life
gestates

cries
    on canvas
forever before
              our eyes
juxtaposed
drip
    by
        drip
into
melancholy

an empty chair
      a sad stare

it is
     what it is

Dark Dreams By Kuldip Medhi

The evenings nowadays have become gloomy
Across the bridge, a bright patch of light
Disappears behind a curtain of mist

Fields lie fallow
After a day of festivities
And roads wind their way
With desolate minds

Not a soul to be seen
Only the whistling voice of the cricket
Fills the evening

He waits with a pale face at the end of the day
As evening descends through the leaves and branches of trees
The black chill of the night penetrates his clothes
And fills his sleep with thick darkness
A dark dream!

MAGIC IS THE MIND

Poetry is to poets a fantasy world,
You can say the truth or be absurd,
You can travel to Venus if you like,
Go by rocket ship or merely hitch hike,
Anything is possible in poetry land,
Fly a kite or play in the sand,
Go back and meet Henry The Eighth
Forget been inspired by Godly faith.
Follow Alice in wonderland, her path
And deal with her dream in a bubble bath!
Meet Joan of Arc and, sadly watch her die,
As she is pronounced a heretic, everything a lie.
But then of course why not meet Shakespeare,
And Anne Hathaway and his King Lear
Walk round their garden, really not absurd,
Did that many years ago, in an English rose world!
Did anyone see or meet Elvis Presley,
A unique singer, began rock and roll expressly,
But this is a roller coaster ride and the centuries
Go up high and they come rolling back down,
Each one brings fond ,sad or delightful memories.
We can even go back as far as Moses
Receiving the ten commandments, God chose us
Do we all abide by them , hope so, for at our end
We must not for the left turn, tend!
This is a poem of mystique and fantasy,
So why not invite Ghandi and Mandela.
For Black lives count,
Making sure protests are peaceful,
And numbers substantially mount!
Let us return to the stars, the moon
And the sun, the planets, the milky way
Perhaps not a hitchhike but a hot air balloon,
Take with you for fun a cartoon character of note,
Or Emmeline Pankhurst, she initiated woman’s vote.
Plant a beautiful garden out in space,
Be the first to do so from the human race,
Remember we cannot be barred
In our poetic imagination, which is avant guarde,

I promise you a journey that will more than be fine!

A Testament To Prince

A testament to Prince

Prince, I saw your vision in the purple rain
And in that moment, I knew you were in no more pain
You graced us with your presence and filled our hearts with love
With your unbounded talent
That came from straight above

You left us sad and broken
And now we have no peace
But together we will strengthen
And our grief will cease

Oh thank you Prince for everything you’ve shared with the human race
We’ll treasure your gift of music
We’ll miss your handsome face

The heavens are rejoicing
And there you’ve found a home
And in that place you joined there
You never are alone

We never will forget you
Your voice will never die
And we will look forever
Into that purple sky

And so we will remember
How richer our earth is
Because Prince Rogers Nelson
Indeed he did exist

Rest well our purple angel
We love you with all our hearts
And we will meet in heaven
And then, we’ll never part

Hi there, Thanks for creating this contest!
I have been with "Poetry Soup" for a couple of years now. I really love "Poetry Soup" because the comments from other poets are genuine and provide wonderful feedback. I am so glad I found Poetry Soup.

The poem, "A Testament to Prince" started it all for me. I have been profoundly moved and devastated by the loss of Prince Rogers Nelson. After he passed away, I began writing poems which were dedicated to him and then eventually evolved into other subjects. I was so inspired that I wrote a poetry book, entitled, "The Microcosm of Poetry". I am in the process of completing my second book. I think my poetry has grown significantly. I have been reading works of other poets. I have also been studying poetry by reading books about it. I think my new poems have better wording and are tighter. I mainly write in lyric or free verse form, but I am always learning! I sincerely hope that you enjoy my first poem on this website.

Thank you for reading my poem and entry. Sincerely, Alona Perlin.

Madonna's Last Hymn

I’m on my fourth lifeline
how about you
The first three pre-owned
the current one new
This one seems fleeting
which gives me concern
My freezer is empty
no steaks left to burn
The first one was blissful
the second had pain
The third one reflective
but this fourth one again….
I try to hold on
and describe it at will
Exceeding my grasp
it alludes me and still…
I wouldn’t go back
to either one, two, or three
The things I see now
ripened fruit on my tree
If this is the end
and the lights start to dim
I’ll sing the words strongly
Madonna’s last hymn…
“More thankful than troubled
more joyous than sad
“More today than tomorrow
—the past in the past”

Notes From a Neglected Piano

You used to
lovingly coax my
keys with your
melodies
flirt and tease so playfully
high-note hitting glee

We enjoyed
taking tunes apart
upside down
inside out
syncopated Beethoven
bobbidy-boo beats

No small feat
with shimmy and shake
boogie, blues
jazz and all
the razzmatazz I could take
late nights wide awake

You kept me
in good company
playing wild
playing loud
fiercely proud of the sounds we
would make all our own

But something
eventually
changed and our
songs became
sad and few, in shades of blue
slowly fading out

Dreary now
mahogany dull
no longer
loved, cared for
forlorn, faded wallflower
voicelessly, I grieve

The Time of God

The time of God
The great is about to fall
Cos their glory is covered
With confusion
They refuse to give up
But prefer to end the time
They never made from it origin
The universe is sad
Am not telling you no lie
Cos the air proves me no lie
How can man challenge it creator
Is a signal of
The time of God

The time of God
The devil's empire
is about to fall
Shame is about to fall
To explain to works of the devil
They can't escape this collapse
Cos too long they have their time
They already showed to the world
How doomed they can be
They have pointed their finger
To the eyes beyond their existence
And now to time is about to change
Hands
The destruction of the poor
Has provoked the worth of nature
And the time is different cos it's
The time of God

The time of God
Let the bloods of the innocent
Be the redemption for the living
Innocent one world wide
Let their sacrifice bring us
The salvation we yain for
Let their spirit project us always
We are not alone
Cos the time is about to
Change
Despite the storms of today
Hope is not lost
They can't destroy the sun
Despite all they do
They can't touch it
I tell you no lie
So in your weaknesses
Just be rest assured that
The time is about to change
Yes after the storms of today
The sun will be out again
To remind you about
The time of God

Benediction To My Father, and Apology For Disallowing

A hint of helping this wholesome Harris son
can across thru the air
Hence this poetic expression
of gratitude Matthew Scott wants to blare
And communicate my genuine
appreciation crystal clear
Toward one whose existence
more valuable to me and dear

As thee doth become older
with natural diminishment with eyes and ear
But lo…tis unproductive to fear
The diminishing sands
of mortal time as cognitive gear
Doth get clogged as well as one
or the other organ allowing ye to hear

The sound of silence echoing
memories of the past – now a blur
Akin to a warm fuzzy feeling
soft as moss or lichen – precious as a coat of fur
Which tomorrows speed faster
becoming yesterday’s lore

Mixed with trials and tribulations less or more
Thickening as starch and ever more difficult to pour
From the egged on noggin blended
into one glob kept in secret store
Perhaps comprising partially healed wounds

at your heart tore
As if a drafted soldier once
in tiptop shape now to the bone years wore
Away whet dreams housed
within myths indistinguishable from truths of yore

Though I too sometimes fret
as tempus fugit slinks away
Where methinks how the years spin
at a quicker pace each day
Inculcating me to savor each moment,
whether weather sunny or gray
Taking stock of self of natural world

as one named John Jay
Audubon, who captured pristine lands
of America as a frieze zing May
Whereby bounteous creatures
large and small at play
Until…the inundation
of settlers did slash, burn and slay

Indiscriminately - setting precedent
for Earth in a precarious balance oye vay
Whence Mother Nature
will win this global Olympic match – yet

By which time, both thyself
and ye will be long turned to ash
Descendants will be dust off
faded photos of me self
before senescence did dash
Totally unaware that me papa Boyce Brandon
with clenched and teeth did gnash

When I fought tooth and nail
and without a word did lash
Back as protestations against behavior
of mine ye disliked and found rash
With frustration spilling forth
like acidic froth that did splash
Slash and burn within,
yet kept mum no matter
from within did thrash.

I LOVE YOU TOO DAD
NO MATTER BACK IN THE DAY YE GOT MAD
YET NOW, AS A FATHER TWAS FRUSTRATION
PERHAPS FUSED WITH BEING SAD
AT MY LIFE & HARD TIMES WHEREIN
TURMOIL ROILED MORE THAN A TAD!

Premium Member Poor Walter

Great apes are the second most intelligent animals

Next to humans of course except for one of my friends

According to many scientific theories, we evolved from the ape family

Aha, that explains my friend Walter

They follow an extreme social life and express different types of emotions

So does Walter, and when he gets overly excited

He jumps up and down and sometimes he pees himself

Where Walter sort of falls behind a bit is making his own home

Using primitive tools and also searching for food in the forest

All in all Walter is a nice enough fellow

But great apes leave him in the dust when it comes to language skills

Oh Walter is not exactly illiterate but let;s put it this way

One a scale of one to ten...

Apes are about a seven and Walter is a distant third at four!

Walter and I grew up together, discovered girls together

But he still hasn't figured out the boy/girl thingy yet

However there's still time, he's only seventy something!

Premium Member Have You Ever

Have you ever questioned why
a sad movie makes you cry?
Have you ever died inside,
contemplating suicide?

Have you ever felt let down,
or faced a nervous breakdown?
Have you ever wept a tear,
spilled entirely out of fear?

Have you ever felt cheated,
despondent and defeated?
Have you ever felt alone,
constantly checking your phone?

Have you ever lied to win,
aware that it was a sin?
Have you ever doubted God,
thinking religion's a fraud?

Have you ever lost your pain,
only to find it again?
Have you ever blamed someone,
for something that you had done?

Have you ever snuck away,
after promising to stay?
Have you ever doubted love,
in a world of push and shove?
