Gathered with sister, my mother and kleenex,
Oblivious to our red noses, facial poses and tears,
Nudging each other with movie memory reflex -
Each of us embrace characters long held as dear.
We submit joyously to this continuous, intense escape
Inside the lives of scandalous Scarlett and romantic Rhett.
Trials and tribulations of civil war, deceit and love shape
Heaven and hell into a dramatic, unforgettable duet.
Torn, we watch as hunger, fear and surrounding violent war,
Harms character’s hearts and more discouragements pour.
Enemy destruction devastates Southern life and lore.
While wishing true love’s fulfillment for Rhett’s desirous heart,
Inevitably his sexy charm will wham our hearts like a wild lamb.
No one should dare interrupt our favorite, dramatic film art, or
Disturb Rhett’s last line, “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.”

I reach for another Kleenex.
The box sits empty on the shelf.
Have I really cried that many tears?
Has my life turned into a sad tale?
Have all the tissues floated down a river of lonely tears?
The time for crying has ended.
I will lift myself.
Poke out my head.
Had not the sun continued to shine in my absence?
My friends cried with me for a while.
A few of the tissues where crumpled in their hands.
Still I was not to be consoled.
What choice did they have but to leave?
In fact I was so sad I barely knew they were there.
So now I rise.
Lift my eyes to the sky.
Let a gentle breeze dry my face.
Smile with thanks for a new day.
For in the end
a river of tears and tissues is enough.

from kleenex to champagne &
back again the torrid twister rips
through life with its emotional
whirlwind of idiosyncratic hang-ups
that show their face after a few months &
the inability to compromise on life
choices once dedicated to oneself now
sacrificed to the mindset of two &
the hurricane joins from just offshore
taking a weather made wrecking ball to
all the hopes & dreams that stirred in
the very beginning.
use the kleenex to wipe up the tears &
the champagne to wash down the anguish &
the kleenex to wipe up the blood & the
champagne to drown out the guilty voices in your
head knock knock knocking on the last door left
to that remote place where your sanity still
attempts to breathe.

kleenex
in a hurricane
my life was
pristine
and carefree
moments before
the storm hit my shores
fleeting
but well spent
every moment was
yet destined
to serve others
with needs
greater than my own
