The Coke Ration
by Bob Moore ©2018
I remember long ago
the freezing winds
and the cold grey snow
5 am at the council gate
to pick up the coke
one hundredweight
The old pram we used
to drag it home
the wheels all buckled
and starting to groan
was something we just had to do
to keep the house warm, all winter through
I was only, about nine or ten
dad away in Korea,
he’d said to me then
you’re the man of the house,
so help your mam
and look after your sisters
the best that you can.
Then he was home
the fighting was done
back to being a kid,
and just having fun
when I look back
it wasn’t so hard
but I remember the cold
and the old council yard.
