Read a book once
Folded the corners
To mark my progress.
It was sort of a
Wagon train read
Long, torturous,
A seemingly endless quest
For an unknown destination
Pictured only in the minds
Of others
Who
Sadly
Were only aggrandizing
What they were told.
The book I read
Had been chosen for me
By a deranged
English teacher/football coach
Before the era of the
Concussion Protocol.
The Book Report I wrote
Received an “A”
I believe because
I trashed the book
Question why it was assigned
As it was a tedious read
Containing statistical
As well as anecdotal
Documentation
Of its unreadability
Or more likely because
He was hung over
After the football team
Beat our traditional rival.
Edgar my dear
Why do you have that spear
Is that your plan?
When in a jam?
Scare the bloody Kansas City yellow and red
When they fight the fowl volture appearing dead
Spirit Haunting
Spirit Daunting
Blazing under the Baltimore sun
Until Poe's poetic message is done
No swift moves will be here
Only Chiefs carcasses holding their Daly beer
High school football game
cheerleaders tossed night sky chill
rhythmic beat of drums
alumni and students roar
October's homecoming queen
Friday night football lights
His whole life high school sports
A rah-rah father behind him
Overflowing his shorts
Covid-19 postponed many dreams
And left an opening, it seems
For other interests to develop
No longer by sports was the lad enveloped
When football was cancelled
The young man found a new love
Electrical engineering his fascination
And so, he decided, his future occupatin
Now football is back, but not the young man
He's busy studying engineering while he can
As for his stubborn father, he's going to court
To sue the school district ~ a day late; a dollar short
Eagles play football here and nice people are always near.

LOVE UNDER THE HIGH SCHOOL BLEACHERS
Some time ago, within a memory
deep in my dark, and most forbidden past,
when I recall your teaching only me,
there in the dark--with love that could not last!
Nor would we ever have such love today--
such great delight--but wicked from the start,
'tis in the past--and there must always stay,
but just a trace is here--to warm my heart;
so I can call--to mind--if late at night
when love seems not to be what love should be,
and I can feel in me, with great delight--
your love again--your lesson given me.
Here-in I be--still deep in love with you
the half-time of our love I'm going through.
