Elvers Poems | Examples

Haiku

salmon leap... for life
shallow streams bid them welcome
otters... all well fed

elvers... millions
passing salmon parr... seabound
smoked eel... delicious

tench... the doctor fish
sought by the diseased... ailing
the river flows on

the great white shark swims
an ever hungry beauty
makes good poetry

the Nile perch... hungry
nigh ate Lake Victoria
greedy humans

European perch
freshwater tiger mimics
finned finesse... tasty

Tommy Ruffe
a freshwater Pope... fishy
no bad habits

whale sharks
fancy the small things in life
jellyfish can sting

a fishy tale...
sirens of the oceans
Davy Jones... shoppers

The Goddess of the Severn

Pulses drown saturated elvers
As a crescent delivers it's catch
White bellied roaches slap and disperse
Pierced and broken suckers latch
Flushed forearms lock with a match
Bleached fingers curl fiercely
Cartilage and rods attach
Each standard raised taking a liberty

Vectors detonate a verse
Chassis release their clutch
Barbels gulp at a netted hearse
Miniscule painted boulders scratch
Humble timber bows with a screech
Discordant sea gulls sing their liturgy
Their hymns bellowed to receive a batch
A veneration
Before performing their red tipped ritual snickersee

The unbaptised draw a curse
Glossed umber in a ditch
The razorback plows a course
To encumber every stitch
A gullet evacuates an itchy apology
A heretic mutters a retorting blasphemy
Fulminations boom and detach
As cumulonimbi reload their artillery

Skulls stoop in sunless pitch
Anointed mantras convene for mercy
Receptacles are laden and rich
Weighted and blessed by her divinity

Premium MemberThe Joy of Children

My Grandkids had a sleep over with me
we had such fun colouring and drawing
they are so delightful and lovely boys
we watched Nat geo wild a while

They were fascinated seeing the animals
loved watching the Osprey feeding his chicks
ten fish a day he had to catch to feed them all
Ryan said what a busy bird but he kept one for himself

This morning we watched the Moray eels
as they swam around the wrecked ship
and a rare sight of them courting so gently
and saw the little Elvers swim away to sea

Means I was not able to write last night
or even to comment on others poems
at two, five and six they kept me very busy
soon they will go home with my daughter

They asked can we sleep over again nana
we really like it at your home it's so fun
bless their little souls so innocent still
they brought much joy and happiness

I will feel rather blue when their mum
comes to take them back home
the house will seem so empty
without their laughter echoing
