A pair of dark crystals gaze
in a sea of white innocence
The bright light's a wisdom ablaze
Unlike anything in the dark familiar
Five laces of warmth enclose
mine like red petals of rose
And the silk of air flutters with life
There is another heart to caress and guide
Suddenly the ticking is loud
Every moment takes time to feel proud
For none gets closer to man's fragility
Than seeing a new form begin to breathe
'It's a boy' a voice quivers -
The voice of a tearful mother
She's thrilled to have another call her 'mother' at nights
She's come past a history of five lives' demise
So I cradle very gently
Could cotten feel too coarse?
Even a light form becomes heavy
When he makes a girl feel less alone
'Welcome, little cousin'
I whispered in his ear
In return he just grinned
before it all disappeared
One day he will know,
how to smile and what it means
For there are several dozen folks
Who will call themselves his family!

Whatever happened to Seraphina?—
precious doll of Caroline,
a present for her seventh birthday
in April, eighteen-eighty-nine.
Her body was of softest cotten,
her hands and face from china made
her lips were painted pink and smiling,
her golden hair a twisting braid.
One day she simply disappeared.
They searched in every space and nook,
but no one could find Seraphina,
and there was nowhere else to look.
Little Abby plays in the attic,
puttering all around for fun.
Seven-year-old Abby finds her
in April twenty-twenty-one.
In a crevice, up under the eaves—
a dusty doll in the old-fashioned style.
Somewhere, little Caroline shares
dear Seraphina's pink-lipped smile.

The first words openly spoken
Mama,is the soup hot yet ?
said as I
Sat on her hip
Mrs.Cotten
The visiting nurse
No longer
Could she quip
She'll talk when
She has something to say
Make her ask for
The things that she wants
A sibling referred to as
Little mama
taking her comments
As taunts
What they didn't see
As I looked on this world
With eyes that
had just turned three
That I stayed up
Often into the night
Quietly
Conversing with me
Holding my cards so
Close to the vest
No longer could willing
put to the test
The diligent love
Little mama ,
had unfailingly ,
tenderly expressed
With an arm wound
Securely about her neck
I decided,there and then
What the heck
As my sister called out
to Big Mama
these words I'll never regret
As I echoed them back into her ear.....Mama is the soup hot yet?
The love I have
for my sister
has always gone
Well and above
My sole experience
till my own
Children came
Of unadulterated love

Religion has carried us far through the years-
Picked cotten for the white man - shed many tears.
Kept them happy nothing else to live for-
They gave the master their best - he wanted more.
Worked all day, we did, from dust until dawn-
Tho' blistery hands - master shout "Boy work On!
You aint tired boy!- you think your works done?"
Look up boy! Don't you still see the sun!?"
As I looked up I heard my father calling me-
Said "The storm cloud will pass my child, you'll see.
Beat in our heads- we didn't have any doubt-
Sealed our praise with a with a Victory Shout!
I see the mother waiting for her child to come home-
Singing, "Precious Lord, please lead me on"
Just look at the child - tears fill his eyes-
Tries to find love-wants no compromise.
Look at the father who can't make ends meet-
Leaving his burdens all at Jesus' feet.
Jesus, way maker- nothing else for him to do-
Shouts! Because Jesus will bring him through.

i slipped up on the rose bush
the thorns were razor sharp
the queen of suspect warnings
sat silent playing on her harp
now im dripping on the weeds
and laying out my big blue tarp
my colossal hat adjusted
ever moving oh so slightly
nodding here, winking there
thoughts expressed so very lightly
the sun was bare upon my wound
exassurbating brightly
sprawled across the ground they lie
the reservations i had picked
dissolving in the open field
with the frosting i had licked
poor little empty cupcake
now so plain and simply panicked
i rested with the bean man
he knew all of my tales
he crossed his arms absurdly
and pitched untrodden sales
since he'd heard all of my anecdotes
our communication fails
my day in dull grey cotten
no more herioc than your plastic
i found frolicking in roses
because he thought it was fantastic
that the big machine that made us turn
was held together by elastic
