along the crevices and cracks craggily creatures crawl
I saw a huge Kansas black rat snake one night last fall
Today I spied a silver skink, there might have been two
And something is wiggling right now under my shoe
Yowling and howling late at night
Meeting of cats by the bright moonlight
Wild yipping and one long scream
Coyotes cornered something by a stream
It might be a cat, it’s a sacrifice
Excited yipping announcing it is nice
The food chain is alive down my country road
A long black rat snake just ate a toad
was skipping through my bathroom one day
about to land in my office, when an inner voice yelled hey!
Turn on the light first, which I had never done, but did it this time.
Saw a six foot black rat snake, stopped my bare feet just in time.
If I had landed on the snake, he would have no doubt taken a bite.
Rat snakes are not poisonous but being bitten is not a delight.
I have been bitten by a snake once before.
I shuddered at having this creature in my house; shut the bathroom door.

An exterminator came out, then we heard his hollers.
The large black rat snake established residence inside.
When we try to scoop it up she is keen enough to hide.

foot longer than my garage door
where are you going
i name you blackie
glad you are a mouse eater
youre welcome to stay
i spy black rat snake
my dog races to my side
not seeing culprit
Don’t misunderstand me,
You just try to deny.
This I could never see,
You left my heart bone dry.
This pain is so unreal,
I am just rotting away.
This is not what’s ideal.
Life’s now in a delay.
Realize this is fake.
Nothing, I was left here.
You are the black rat snake.
