Its the morning after the night before
As i leave my new wife, whom i lovingly adore
My orders came through, overseas i head
With my band of brothers, not knowing what's ahead
Married for days, whilst conflict takes him away
Holding sheets where we slept, my memory bouquet
At the bottom of our bed, there lies a virgin white rose
With a note beneath i am in momentary froze
I sit and stare as to what it might say
Knowing this is the day my love flies away
My darling Tinks i leave this white rose for you
Its pristine appearance describes my darling so true
It symbolises you, so innocent so pure
With your love in my heart, i will return i assure
Think of the day, from these distant lands from beyond
For the morning after the night before, we will respond
This virgin white rose, so bridal so pure
You and its safety i will secure, for you to return for our future
The day you come home, it shall lay on our bed
And we will continue our lives, as you have always said
I will go about my tomorrow's, thinking of you every day
And prey that this virgin white rose, never turns deathly grey

I still roll over in bed at night expecting to hear her snoring.
I still awake before sunrise and to no one whisper, “Good morning”.
I still get dressed in the dark, so the light will not disturb her,
And tiptoe out of the room stealing a glance over my shoulder.
I still set two breakfast plates and pull out her kitchen chair
And still fix eggs for her before remembering she’s not there.
I still leave the Funnies page, when I take the paper
And still expect the Crosswords done when I return much later.
I still call out, “Honey, I’m home”, when walking in the door,
But I don’t hear, “I'm back here”, returned to me any more.
I still pour two cups of wine in our favorite glasses,
But both of them I end up drinking before the night time passes.
It hardly seems like ten years ago that I lost my darling wife,
She shared and was a part of me for thirty years of my life,
But it still seems as if she’s here in my empty home,
Although in every one of my rooms I find that I’m alone.
Some day she will come back to me,
Or I will go be with her,
And continue what was meant to be,
For always and ever.
What am I doing here?
The wind is blowing
The snow is swirling in clouds of white
I know there are cars out there
I can hear them
See their dimming tail lights
The bag sitting next to me
It reminds me of my warm house
The first I built that you now enjoy
Is it all worth it?
Did you really have the nerve to ask me?
Did you look outside?
Then did you decide to risk my life?
I would have gone in the morning
You know I would have
The snow would have been gone by then
I would still be able to feel my fingers
I think I lost my toes about a mile back
But, I know that doesn’t matter
The wind, the snow, the cold
They are nothing to you
Cuddled in that warm blanket
Before that blazing fire
My fire
The one I started
The one I tended from ambers
I know
You say you love me
On a cold night like this I doubt it
Until I get home and I see your smile
As you take the bag
Look inside
And you eat the first of many sweet French pickles
Followed by that pint of ice cream
I see that smile
And I know all the warmth I need
Until tomorrow night when I get to do it all again.
