dust upon treadmill
Inspired by the contest about addictions
not an entry....
Since my back problems and then the surgery,
I haven't been on the treadmill..I got on it
this morning and there was an inch of dust..
I have spent a lot of time on the computer
reading, writing, searching out questions, etc.
It becomes addictive..

i park my car
and i step outside
hoping that the quiet
will help me clear my mind
i always mend this way
but it didn't work this time
cus for a second
i look up at the stars
and it comes rushing in
just how small we are
that kind of self awareness scares me
so i get back inside my car
and in that darkness
that i used to like
i find myself reaching
for the overhead light
i've never felt more scared
than i do in this infinite quiet
i whisper something
just to fill the space
hoping that the sound
will scare the introspection away
"well, on the bright side, this new self loathing,
should keep my narcissism at bay"
i laugh but it is drown out
by the sound
of the tense rumbling
of looming thunder clouds
i wonder how God could hear me
amidst all of this sound
in spite of this
i decide to pray
"Dear God above,
please take this fear away
cus i feel so small right now
could you just tell me that's ok?"
well morning's here
and no sign has come
so if God should call
just tell him i'm not home
i always feighn faithlessness
when i'm feeling this alone
but i looked out my window
at a passing child
who was dancing round
playing with the light
he cast a shadow
though the sun beat him in size
in his shadow
my life flashed before my eyes
and i still feel small
but yet i smile
cus so is the sun
if it can be beaten by a child

I must admit that I ain't very handy with hammer and nails,
And am hopelessly at sea when figurin' technical details.
As to fixin' things with fancy tools, I haven't a clue,
But I'm a whiz at usin' duct tape, balin' wire and super glue!
Tho' it's somewhat unwieldly and it sure ain't too ornate,
Balin' wire can be used in an emergency as hinges for a gate!
'Tis perfect for securin' the droopin' bumper on my automobile,
And for supportin' the saggin' muffler, balin' wire is ideal!
No doubt you'll bond at least two fingers together, 'tis true,
But, Oh! The myriad of things to be fixed with super glue!
'Tis good for repairin' artificial teeth when in a pinch,
And for mendin' broken shards and earrings, 'tis a cinch!
How can we ever thank the feller who invented duct tape enough!
It holds the universe together! Life without it would be tough!
It'll patch anything, gag a spouse, keep a man's toupee in place;
Why! It was even used to repair Apollo 13 in outer space!
With these marvels of the modern age I can tackle any situation,
Fixin' things with simple application and heady innovation.
Why should I be thwarted usin' nails, screws, staples and such,
When duct tape, super glue and balin' wire are my sturdy crutch!

Turn up the radio and ...
It's the same ol' situation,
The same songs, same band
That raised my generation
That was then, this is now
Nothing's changed but my age,
And four numbers, somehow
On a calendar's page ...
It happened again today
In the store where I shopped,
In the restaurant, I heard it play
Proving the 80's never stopped
That was then, this is now
O, to revive a faded fad,
If we never forget how
Good times can still be had
Life, like a cassette tape
With two sides, was designed,
From Side A, Side B can't escape
If you just press rewind ...

They go on the attack and inveigh.
Hear the gasp and the utter dismay!
we try hard not to laugh
when they commit each gaffe
No rewind. no delete. no delay.

Silence is Golden – Duct Tape is Silver
Be quiet….
there is nothing that you can say……that
will not make…
….the situation
……………….worse.

Do they make duct tape for a mother's heart
That breaks each time her child's emotions crash
Like waves against a rocky cliff?
A heart pitted by the tears shed
When other kids fling arrows of venomous disdain.
Can you glue a heart split open by
Empathy for the offspring who has no date to prom,
Never gets flowers on Valentine's
and who, with all her heart, tries to make sure
Her friends don't suffer the same fate?
How much would it cost to replace a mother's heart
Each time it was broken from the cries of pain
On her children's lips, or the brave face they put on,
When their souls have been crushed
By another's rejection?
For her, is the hope of relationship restored enough
To shock a dying heart into beating hopefully
For one more day?
Can you regenerate a heart run dry
From lack of trust and affection?
Is it sensible that the resentful little creature
Created from our DNA should also hold our fragile,
Crumbly, feta cheese hearts
In their little boisterous and unforgiving hands?
And yet, given the choice, a mother says,
"Pass the glue. Sign me up for a transplant.
Because having children is what built my heart,
What gave it life, why it beats."
Do they make duct tape for a mother's heart?
It doesn't matter,
because holding the pieces together
When everything is falling apart
Is what mothers do best.
Until the last beat, the last breath,
The last thought of her children:
The only pieces of her soul
That are left behind when she is gone.

Free verse
It seems it takes reams of paperwork to get things done nowadays.
You can become so snarled in red tape that it'll leave you in a daze!
I wonder how Noah would've coped with such onerous fiddle-faddle,
Had panels and boards been involved to design for him a simple paddle!
Did he have building codes and hordes of bureaucrats to appease,
Or pesky environmentalists hugging the gopherwood trees?
Was there an OSHA lurking about enforcing inane regulations?
Such balderdash would've added to his heap of frustrations!
Was an ASPCA "watchdog" there fretting about all the creatures,
Insisting that cages and stalls have the latest comfort features?
Was their a labor union hovering nigh demanding a living wage?
Such piffle would've launched Noah into a towering rage!
Had Noah heeded those who showered him with sneer and scorn,
Or had he drowned in seas of red tape to stifle his Godly bourne,
He might've been discouraged and cancelled the whole affair.
That could've spelled doom for humankind right then and there!
But Noah's Boss, that Master Architect superintending from Above,
Gave Noah the specifications and a not too gentle shove!
Noah, Japheth, Ham and Shem hustled and the Ark soon took shape.
'Twas built on schedule, with no cost overruns and no red tape!

I thought that this feeling
Of falling/flying and pain/healing
Would all just go away
But there's a gaping hole in my heart
That grows each day
There's always this pulling at my heart
Just listen, you might actually hear it breaking
Each snag is just another crack in my red mirror
No matter how hard I try to fix it,
It's as if the tape and glue weren't meant to be there
My memories of us flood my mind
But as my mirror cracks, tears pool my hazel eyes
They say to wait for the right person, for that one special kiss
I never felt that until him, and I felt those sparks glow
Now he's gone
And as I feel everything inside of me tearing apart
I know now that I should have hid that spark
Because he doesn't feel the same
Now he's moved on, yes, he's gone.
I see him once in a while
Laughing, acting as if nothing had ever happened
Oh, how I wish I could forget as quickly as he had
But unfortunately the damage is done
And no matter how much I repair my mirror
The glue and tape fall off.

Ballad
No matter how many tears I've shed,
You'll always haunt me.
There's nothing that will stop you
From torturing me.
Every promise you ever whispered
Was spoiled when it passed your lips.
Every lie I always believed.
I held my soul together with duct tape.
When you violated me, when you beat me
I'd just add another layer of it
Hoping that it'll keep me together,
Keep me from crumbling to your touch.
You took what was most important,
You took it and cackled,
I lay broken on the floor crying
As I desperately try to keep my self together.
The bruises left by your fists decorate
My face. I tried to scream but nothing came out.
The more I tried to make you happy, the more it hurt.
Add another layer. Keep my (in)sanity in check.
Even after everything you've done to me,
It still hurt when you left.
There was a gaping hole
That the duct tape couldn't fill.
Now I stare in the mirror,
Gone are the cuts
Gone are the bruises
But I don't feel any better.
There's a hole that can't be
Filled by silence. Only your cruelty
Can fix me. Only lying to myself
and adding more layers can help.
I never realized how much I needed you,
Never realized that I craved the abuse,
Never wanted you to leave,
Only wanted you to hurt me.
Why can't I get over you?
Why do I still want to live in Hell?
What have you done?
Why won't the duct tape fix it?

Blank verse
In my husband's first pastorite
Had some young married men
Who were full of mischievousness
At a church social late one night
These young men disappeared
Out of everyone's sight
Out on the parking lot
They did their deed
Duct taped the headlights (Another use for duct tape)
So when we did leave
They could laught at the pun
But my husband just
Onto the road he did run
But he stopped when he
Saw their faces
Oh the sight of their
Disgraces and horror
That it could be a disaster

Asset rich and cash poor
Farming’s now a constant war
Stupid rules; I’ve had enough
It’s getting hard and bloody rough.
More rules and forms come everyday
A thousand bastards want their say!
Some greenie wants to save my trees
Another thinks I’m killing bees.
Needs records now for spreading fert
Fence creeks and streams, yes every squirt.
Fluoro signs for all the dangers
Map some nature, for DOC rangers.
Give Queens chain access to the water
Whoops! Electric fence just zapped your daughter
Should I try and stop the sun
Would hate a “guest” to burn his bum.
Need consent now to change your view
SAFE cries foul on baa-ing ewes.
Should I read to stock at night?
Not too scary. Can’t cause them fright.
Drought.
Decision made. Poor stock to sale
Yay! Some do good bastard threatened jail.
Everyone is taking aim
Shall I hang my head in shame?
Got some weeds, must get them gone
So I spray them. I’m still wrong!
On a quad? Well protect your noggin’
I suppose next they'll want a public floggin’
Give me space to do my job
Right, sod off now and shut your gob.

For you
I would
create a mixtape
which I know is an ancient technology but
with me and you it is just that simple.
I race to you like we used to rush into each other's arms in highschool
where our only concern was whether or not we could get the courage to talk to each other without shaking.....
This is the playlist that I would prepare for you.
First and foremost I'd put Hate to see you go by The colour fred
Because it is true as the song has said
Truly if I could I would become a
sculptor...
I would place the unformed chunk of my clayself and spin.
Create myself in the image of your ideal perfection.
I would spin
Faster than the spools could play the songs on re-wind
I want so badly to make an impresion
and I know that the the tape can only contain up to 35 minutes for you to get the underlying
message
October Nights, by Yellowcard
will follow soon after
because that exotic night in your car
where the street lights were our blankets
is constantly on replay in my mind
Right before the heavy nod of sleep
I daydream
You are laying beside me, and in this private realm of thought
We travel like archeologists over the naked lay of our connected bodies
and I live through the pleasure that this daydream explodes into my mind like
parasympathetic nerve ending fireworks
Remember will play softly by Allister
and I'll hold onto the hope that you will forgive me of this time in our lives where I have to
press pause
for I am broken still
Knaans waving flag will resound from your stereos
For 'tis this soundtrack where my battle cry is derived
I know it is just the beginning but I will push myself past my barriers
Pieces by Sum 41 will be your lullaby
because this is the song that brought back the blue into my gray eyes
Hopefully side one will bring you comfort
because you are everything I am looking for in a guy
I am but a broken winged robin who has got to learn once more to fly.
and lastly Blink 182's I miss you
Because there is not a moment in the day where my mind wanders back to you

Duct Tape Will Fix Most Anything
By Elton Camp
It’s one of the most versatile products I’ve seen
Duct tape, whether it’s gray, brown or even green
Any cracked tiles you don’t really need to replace
A bit of sticky tape will hold them right in place
Is your radiator hose getting about ready to burst?
It won’t, as long as you wrap it with duct tape first
And if you’ve got a slit in your car’s vinyl seat
A piece of duct tape will close it up ever so neat
If your throw rugs are always trying to scoot around
Duct tape the bottom to keep them were they’re found
It will hold electric extension cords down to the floor
So that you can walk and not trip over them any more
It’ll also hold electric wires together after a splice
Wider than electrical tape so that it work so nice
If the rearview mirror should try to drop from the car,
Duct tape will keep it from drooping down quite so far
If your brother’s visiting child is noisy as well as cute
It can work quite well to put the odious brat on mute
An envelope it will seal up very secure and tight
In case the taste of glue isn’t exactly your delight
It will easily close up a partial bag of potato chips
In case the bag isn’t one of the type that zips
If the batteries in the TV remote control pop out,
Duct tape will safely hold them in without a doubt
And anytime that your shoe laces happen to break
Just keep your shoes fastened with some duct tape
If the dryer should leave some lint on your clothes,
Don’t need a brush, duct tape works better than those
If your old car has, in spots, completely rusted through
Then some pieces of duct is all you need to make do
If the heel of your sock has grown a lot too thin,
Duct tape will make it just like new once again
If suspicions of your wife’s trust you have felt
Then it will make an emergency chastity belt
But one thing the manufacturer truly does feel
Is that any leaking duct work it won’t much seal

I am a demo tape
Maker,
Compulsive Rock and Roll
Faker,
It is my need, I pay no heed,
To those who say
I won't get anywhere,
I have trained myself not to care,
It makes my day less boring,
My future less worrying.
I keep writing the songs
About the rights and the wrongs,
In the vain hope
That someday somewhere
Among the reject slips,
There might be someone
Who thinks I'm hip,
The last word,
Le dernier cri,
The new McCartney, no...
I know that
It won't happen,
I know that I've got talent,
But I ain't got enough,
I guess that's tough.
I keep writing the songs
About the rights and the wrongs,
In the vain hope
That someday somewhere
Among the reject slips,
There might be someone
Who thinks I'm hip,
The last word,
Le dernier cri,
The new McCartney, no...
