Memories

Life is full of memories/
of times past/ and present/
times from my childhood/
of running in the rain/ crying/
because the raindrops were hitting me on the head/
and my mother calling to me/
I'm here/ don't cry/ it's all right.
Children chasing butterflies/ and playing
ball in the neighbor's field.
Watching the sunrise/ and the stars telling
me to have a good day/ just before they went
away.
Walking down a path at a summer camp/fishing in
a favorite spot/and catching a bass that I'm still
talking about.
Building a raft with a best friend/ cutting trees and
logs/ and floating them in a warm summer breeze.
Walking in the moonlight with a first girl friend/ and experiencing
our first warm kiss.
Holding hands and dreaming dreams/and walking barefoot down a dusty
road/kicking up dust/and feeling it sifting through bare toes.
Seeing a first born child/holding it tight in my arms/
looking into its eyes/ and seeing it smile back.
Hearing a child ask/ 'what are moonbeams, and where do they go?'/
Holding a child as it goes to sleep in my arms/
knowing that the world is all right/because daddy is near/
and there is nothing to fear.
Memories are mine/and wonderful to share/
as time races on/and grandchildren gather in my arms/
Watching them chase butterflies/and ask about moonbeams/
and rainbows/and catch a first fish/and tell me/.....
......I love you big daddy.

Premium Member That Old Red Barn

I still remember that old barn so red; a center point of my youth;
Pickle barrels in the cellar; cows on the ground floor and hay stored in the loft.

I rode the John Deere a thousand times in and out of her wide, always opened doors;
Plowing fields near and far, but with her redness never out of my distant sight.

She housed the cows we milked and the tools we used throughout the long, hard day;
And, she was our playground on those summer days when chores were done by noon.

I remember her beautiful, natural smell that our city cousins abhorred;
And, I knew every nook and cranny that I could hide in to get away from their whines.

We would swing on the rope out of the loft, landing on piles of freshly cut hay;
And, just lay quietly in the night with a cool summer breeze passing through her doors.

It was in this red haven that I birthed my first calf and learned how to set a broken leg;
And, it was high in the loft with my high school sweetheart that I first became a man.

The farm that housed that wondrous red barn is now a mall parking lot;
But, the memories of lessons learned within are forever blazoned upon my mind.

Lovely Summer Nights

sitting in the pool
swimming in the moonlit night
steaks are on the grill
watermelon is on ice
what a lovely summer night

"Tanka you contest on summer nights"

Summers Gone By

Winter days have left us feeling so cheerful,

looking forward to those summer nights

just sitting outside smelling sweet summer air

so fresh, is delightful as can be.

Watching bright stars far away in the dark sky,

taking me back to days of my youth and

summer days of long ago,

when friends and I would tell

ghost stories until way past bedtime,

each night of the week, brought new

memories to store in our hearts to carry

with us to adulthood, wishing for those

days to return again, but knowing their

gone just like the falling stars we use

to see long ago.

Summer Dreams Cloud Autumn Streams

Harvest moon christens autumn's
regal jubilee
But festive soul pants for June's,
Rose moon matinee
Autumn's leaves sparkle with newly
minted sleeves
Yet my mellowed heart for
summer's jade cloak grieves
Bold colors tinge forest canvas
with newly painted eaves
But my insatiable eyes for the
silted, summer meadow seethes
Autumn's mountain orchards with
crisp, tart apple scents tease
Still my truant nostrils long July's,
blackberry aroma to breathe
Swirling autumn winds through
trees a  blithe melody wheeze
But muffled ears strain to hear
soothing rhythms of a summer
breeze
My footsteps trod over the quilted
carpet of autumn's fallen leaves
Yet tingling feet long summer's
soft, clover strands soles to fleece

Days of Summer Long Ago

When the days of summer seemed so long
And the dirt road was my path
I'd find pop bottles by the side of the road
Thrown from cars as they roared past

I'd collect the bottles of many shapes and sizes
Then to the grocery store I'd go
The cashier would always smile at me
When I brought in the load

Three cents apiece I got back then
And candy I might buy
Or maybe a pack of baseball cards
With bubble gum inside

It seems now not so long ago
Those childhood days gone past
When the days of summer seemed so long
And a dirt road was my path
