A Face

AS I TRAVEL THRU THIS LIFE,
MANY FACES SHALL I SEE,
SOME SO FAIR, AND SOME SO PURE,
BUT NONE AS SWEET AS THEE.

A FACE SO BRIGHT AND FULL OF LIFE,
WITH EYES THAT SEEM TO GLOW,
A NOSE SO CUTE, A SMILE SO KIND,
CAN'T HELP BUT LOVE IT SO.

I HAVE SEEN THIS FACE IN MY DREAMS,
I SEE IT WHEN I WAKE,
WHEN I SEE IT THERE BEFORE ME,
MY BREATH IT OFTEN TAKES.

SUCH A FACE I LONG TO SEE,
EACH AND EVERY DAY,
IT FILLS MY HEART WITH SUCH A CHEER,
PLEASE DON'T TAKE THIS FACE AWAY.

SO AS I TRAVEL THRU THIS WORLD,
THIS I HOLD AS TRUE,
THE FACE I SEE BEFORE ME,
OF COURSE BELONGS TO YOU.

Lifetime Travelers

“We will not be lifetime travelers.”
-- Inventing My Life, Erica Jong

No, my love, we will not last forever.
Sunrises fade into noon,
as a perfect day ends in purple sunset.
Icicles melt, dripping into dirty puddles.
Summers end, students migrate in masses,
so, too, must we leave each other.

No, my love, we will not travel this life together.
These next years will be spent distant,
walking different daily sidewalks:
Wheels turn, roads roll back into the horizon,
maps crease along well-worn edges –
so, too, must we fall apart.

And yet – we traveled one summer,
in cars, in bedrooms we no longer belong to,
to lakes, woods, drunken kisses.
One summer can be three months;
to me, we were together a lifetime.
I die – and I am reborn, apart from you.

So, my love – do not forget our lifetime.
Though only an infant in eternity’s scheme,
it lived, it lasted – and we loved.
So, too, you must travel new lifetimes,
and find new lovers to fill the empty cushion
of your passenger seat.

Field of Thorns

I live in a maze that no
one knows
It's a place you've created
Light and dark and cold
You've made me love you
until I lost my way
This maze I travel every
day
Seeing you close and
most days far away
I navigate and hope for
safety
At every turn
Guilt and sorrow await
Sometimes if I'm lucky
There is ecsta
To feel along these
endless walls and paths
alone
Has been the source of
my undoing
My private catacomb
I hear you
And i see your face
Amidst emotions I can't
erase
To travel this maze
Has been what no one
knows
This never ending field of
thorns

The Reluctant Dreamer

Don't want to close my eyes
Don't want to travel the misty skies
I know that as soon as I do
His face will be there again
And I'll see the light of his eyes
Coming through the misty skies.

I'll see his smile and I'm mesmerized,
My heart seized by a knot so tight
And when I wake, the ache remains
Though he abides not by my side
And I have to battle my way
Out of misty skies to brighten up my day.

Don't want to close my eyes
Don't want to travel the misty skies.
