D. H. Lawrence was a Better Man
I read about his snake
And was quite impressed with the
Alliteration and symbolism he used
To express that moment
As they met at the “stone trough.”
I appreciated his struggle with
The voice of his education which told him to
“Take a stick and break him now,
and finish him off.”
I too have faced the snake
And made a decision not so “perverse”…
or “cowardly”…or “honorable”.
The rattler was long and sleek
And glistened in her new skin.
I found her waiting in my tracks
As I returned across the field.
There was a moment as she flicked her tongue,
That I stood and gazed upon her,
Knowing what D.H. had felt.
Why was she there… and
How was it that we should meet?
My admiration was brief…
Shovel in hand…I struck her down.
It was the voice of my father
That said she must die…
“And truly I was afraid…”
Surely she would have struck me
Had I not seen her first.
And yet I questioned my decision…
Was it “paltry” and “vulgar…a mean act?”
I too shall think of the albatross…
And yet be watchful for the snake…
Again there will be a decision to make…
Having felt his “pettiness”…still I know…
D. H. Lawrence was a better man.
A situation, that affects the heart,
Marks some education as undefined,
While others' education is designed
To be considered as state of the art.
And, it is not just about being smart,
But about the powerful who "resign."
Those who are unwilling to press rewind,
Thus giving education a fresh start.
Those who receive the very best learning,
Have an opportunity to do well,
While those students who do not, keep turning
Into adults, who continue to fail.
This, too, is a division of earnings.
A division that is not hard to tell.
Basic concept is haunting near,
aged wisdom in full gear.
No defined map to express the way,
wayward direction confuse the day.
A force will hold back the power of the train,
no mossback left this hour to go insane.
To say, to say, to say it again,
but no tool to release the message send.
To be able to write, the makers gift,
without proper education just gloom and drift.
The table is loaded- Thanksgiving..
More than the family can ever eat
Thanks given for this bountiful privilege,
It’s the same at each house on the street.
But on places all over the globe..
Drought, war and government greed.
Little water, food, education or hope,
How many helpless children to feed?
If shame could nourish even one person,
Then thousands we should be able to feed.
Just one piece of bread from each of us…
We have so much more than we need.
For Sami's contest..A Piece of Bread Please.
