The Evangelist

The Evangelist

There comes a man, more cursed than not
Spiritually guided, or so he must be
To remind the children of things they forgot
Of the price of salvation and eternity
With the staff of moses he prods their coals
Embers of a fire that’s grown cold
A raging flame that had filled their souls
Like sheep scattered, gone from the fold
Through the dark with a light so bright
He seeks these lambs that lose their way
To his tented shelter, out of the night
They come together to kneel and pray
As some stand back, others draw near
With respect for the feeling about to come
To some it’s love, but to others it’s fear
For they all know where it’s from
Softly at first it starts to move
From person to person it begins to flow
With a shout or cry, tongues do prove
That a heavenly presence runs the show
As stiffened necks begin to bow
As stony hearts start to crumble
The spirit teaches, for it knows how
That when at first we learn to be humble
When the chains of pride are broken
And the yoke of bondage cast away
A comforting spirit of tongues is spoken
With unknown words you will say
For those that are standing near and about
For them that must have their sign
For those that are weak or of doubt
An unexcelled joy they will find
When on this narrow path they go
Hand in hand with the holy one
With the sword of truth to slay our foe
Power given through gods only son
These gifts of the spirit are very real
Tools from the carpenter that he gave
A mystery to most, but he does reveal
There every use for this world to save
So comes this man of no special breed
Chosen of god to spread his flame
A gift to his children to fill a need
For after the fire……nothings the same

Pity the poor evangelist.
He must always be so perfect.
Not for him the downcast brow,
For fear of it's effect,

On those that he may chance to meet,
Who know of his profession.
A man like him must always greet,
A critical procession.

For friend and foe he must remain,
A beacon in the sky,
To sing his song with glad refrain,
And never dare a sigh;

For if he lets the barrier down,
Even for a moment,
The crowd is sure he's lost his crown,
And thinks his spirit dormant.

We all are made of flesh and blood,
And though some think this odd,
It's hard to stand on a pedestal, Friend,
Even for men of God.

Evangelist Don L Crowder

Black face preacher boy smiling, Pittsburgh black boy
Come snow white all my sins away
Come ladle and spoon the church Jehovah's joy
Come altar me to kneel and pray
Black face boy, jumping up and down in glory
From end to end of dais yearning to jump the cage
Pulpit acting like a stage, I feel the kingdom rage
In the follicles of flesh, tell sin's story
Bring back the flock, O, Jesus saves
Bring back the word cross the blue waves.

O but my black face preacher friend is silent
Face skyward and no word is said
And in my heart, memory makes lament
Donald Leroy Crowder is dead.
From 1925 to now is long, long walk
A long walk for a black child, all the way to Canaan's home
And everywhere a truth seed grows in some fertile loam
And I too out of it, a full flaming stalk
But when church is full the silence
Is sorrows secret evidence.

Black face preacher boy smiling, lighting the word
In dark hearts and twisted places
I tell them do not cry, there's more to be heard
Waiting for the morning, traces
Of sorrow swept away, waiting for the dawn
To come singing, you and that choir, and the angels winging
Silence, the black boy salvation in white rejoicing
O let the glory come, come dawn
O Christ again, come jubilee
O grave be glad and set us free.

Sometimes we thinnk so much of someone we put them on a pedestal in our mind's eye.
When we do that we don't really do them any favors. Actually we do them a dis-service.
Because then we expect much more of them than we should.
That's not fair. People are people, no more and no less.

The Street Evangelist

THE STREET EVANGELIST

There is a new dark shroud of wintry mass,
Covering the hidden beauty of the land.

It emanates from a deceptive layer
Of smooth-honeyed words which stroke
Their spiteful way into artless minds,
Hearing with open conduits.

The charlatan, dressed up
As a worthy preacher,
Smirks through his enticing act
Of treachery, no one, listening
Except the crazed followers to nowhere.

The rest of humanity go about
Their untroubled business
Without a furtive glance,
Disappearing into thin air.

Perhaps a single raised eyebrow
Betrays profound disdain.
Otherwise, life goes on
As though quackery is far from
All circles of sane thought.

The Television Evangelist

The Television Evangelist

By Elton Camp

Every Sunday, be sure to go
To the old-time revival show
Strives to keep your devotion
By strong appeal to emotion

Suggests you are a sinner dire
Much in risk of hellish fire
Will show you how today
To escape, there is a way

First you truly must believe
Never allow Satan to deceive
There is something else to say
The reverend you must obey

Favor of this man of God
Will assure a heavenly nod
He’s right here every week
Authorized by God to speak

Lets you know he has had a call
To offer salvation to one and all
But his ministry could be lost
Due to all of his growing cost

That’s where you come in
So cough it up, my friend
You can’t afford not to give
So in heavens you can live

Tithe is the least you owe
So send along the dough
If to pay proves too hard
We will take Master Card

If you give us a larger amount
Untold blessings, you will count
Generosity God will sure repay
On that fearsome judgment day

We will gladly hug your neck
For your Social Security check
Please mail it on to our address
And in that way, love express

To those who will give enough
We mail back some holy stuff
Lock of the good reverend’s hair
To show how very much we care

Cross looks like made of gold
Since you did as you were told
Or to drive away all your fears
Small vial of the preacher’s tears

Those who show the love they bear
Will receive from us special prayer
But know any who dare to give less
Cannot expect us or God to bless

T-o please the Lord so great.
I-n spite of the tribulation,
A-ll he hopes is the glorious bliss;

The Telly-Evangelist

He could turn a Spring day
into ash and brimstone.
His wife zealously practiced adultery.
She would join him at the pulpit,
her blond hair glowing like a halo.
She loved his money religiously.
He was a bible thumping man of God,
but his cable show was rocked by scandal.
when a car salesman ran off with his angel,
for many of us it seemed almost
biblical.

Unlucky Evangelist

His self-perception as master
Has stuck like a sticky plaster
Just like Reggae to the Raster
And prized spaghetti to Pasta …

Now, ahead of our church pastor
In spreading our Christ like Castor
His knowledge of Theology Vast
His reaching of Bible Verse fast …

To many An Overlooked Star,
Because eyes do not grab The Far;
Hence, it’s been an obscurity
And a shaky security
Only in crazy dreams handshakes
With Mr. President or snakes …

True then, An Unlucky Champion
Though served Great Meals in a luncheon.

*2 Timothy 4:5 But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.

Evangelist, a Bible-label for work* of God’s empowerment
Victorious for wondrous and glorious reaching-out venture
Asserting that the Saviour anchors redemption-assurance
Nurturing faith, propped well upon rich spiritual nourishing…
Going, guided by the Holy Ghost; with divine light, glowing
Enabled to minister along joyful servanthood example
Lover of the Lord, leading others midst building lives…
I am the fruit; and now endowed with evangelism-influence
Steadfast is my commitment for prayerful winning of souls
Triumphant to tell the Gospel: “Trust Jesus Christ today.”
