For nigh on a hundred-fifty years it has graced the rugged shore of Maine!
Its welcoming beacon guiding sea-faring souls who sail the mighty main!
It has weathered untold fearsome storms of gale, snow, sleet and rain;
A faithful, stalwart sentry defying such nuisances, guarding its vast domain!
Old Captain Blair, its keeper, knows all too well the perils of the sea,
For he captained majestic sailing ships for many decades, you see.
He wearily climbs the circular stair to light the candles at close of day,
And with practiced eye, scans the roiling sea to ascertain that all is okay.
Alas, one dark and stormy night the US Frigate Arcturus met her fate!
A blinding fog and raging seas doomed the Arcturus on that fateful date!
The beam of the lighthouse could not be seen! There was naught to do!
The ship was dashed upon unforgiving shoals drowning her valiant crew!
The old lighthouse still guards that stretch of sea to this very day.
Modern lamps now cast their beam while Captain Blair sleeps 'neath the clay!

Rhyme
When hearts are broken,
They travel to the land of sadness
By ships of sorrow,
They sail through oceans of tears.
Captained by solitude,
They go through raging storm of unsettledness
Broken hearts go deep,
Into trenches of pain.
Intoxicated by grief,
They tremble in fear
Fading reason,
Catapults them into the field of mayhem.
They suffer pinches from thorns of loneliness
And are made to settle on the throne of solitude
Ask me where broken hearts go,
And I'll tell you
They go nowhere,
But deep down the drain.

They flew the skull and cross bones
Up high above the deck.
Pirates on the open sea
They had treasures to collect.
One man from the crows nest
Kept a vigil from on high.
Looking out for any ships
That happen to pass by.
Their crews were mostly misfits
Ones who’ve gone astray.
They would work the Pirate ships
Just to get away.
When a ship was spotted
A battle would soon commence.
In hopes to steal a treasure
And ammunition for their defense.
Men were usually Captains
But women it is said.
Females that Captained pirate ships
Were the baddest of the bad.
Whether it was the Royal Navy
Or the great Empire of Rome.
Female captains of pirate ships
Made themselves at home.
So whether male or female
Pirates were bad news.
And the captains of these pirate ships
Had to pay their dues.

Light Verse
His gold teeth glistened in the sun
As ‘Long Ben Avery’ turned
To face his captives, head lowered,
Their providence to learn
For Avery was a pirate bold
Trained in the Kings’ Navy
Who, disillusioned with his lot,
Captained a mutiny
He seized ‘The Fancy’, in Cadiz
An act both rare, and bold
Then set out on the briny sea
In search of ships with gold
He plundered every vessel met
With not one man set free
And soon, his name spread fear and dread
Across the seven seas
For two years, not a ship was safe
As treasure he amassed,
But his biggest booty taken
Would prove to be his last
He sailed down to the Mandab Strait
And other ships did meet
Who chose him as their Admiral,
To raid the India Fleet
The ‘Mogul’s’ flagships, tried to flee
Chased by the pirate fleet
But a brutal, two hour battle,
Ended with their defeat
The pirates tortured those they caught
Without a thought, or care
As they searched on board for treasure
For each, to glean their share
The ‘Mogul’, proffered swift revenge
Hunting the pirates down,
Swearing each villain, had to hang
For crimes against his crown
The pirates scattered, far and wide
To skirt captivity
But most were caught, and hung with rope
Strung from the nearest tree
But Avery, was never found
Or his share of the hoard
It’s rumoured that his crew killed him,
And threw him overboard
No matter what became of him
Or what, was ‘Long Ben’s’ fate
No man’s ever bettered his feat
In history, to date.

Columbus Day Dream
Christopher Colombo was the very one.
Born in Italy 1451.
Day dreamed of sailing while weaving wool.
A captain at sea was in his soul.
His quest compelled him westward bound.
God let him know the world was round.
In fourteen hundred and ninety two.
Three ships set sail on the ocean blue.
The Nina, the Pinta, the Santa Maria.
He captained all three and discovered

Simon has been to 7 Paralympic games,
Starting with Barcelona and including Rio,
He has a silver from Atlanta - 1992 planes,
A bronze Athens 2004, a bronze 2008 trio.
After a night out on his way home, shortcut,
He tripped and fell onto a live railway track,
The driver could not stop in time, it strut,
But a nurse by-passer saved his life back.
He is a large, tall man at 6 ft 5, amputee,
And says “I didn't get picked because I’m
a fantastic player but ‘cos I was big [see].
The disability’s secondary.“ You have dime.
He’s won 2 World Championship silvers,
And 11 European Championship medals,
With 4 golds, 4 silvers, 3 bronze slivers:
He captained teamGB in 2011 in capitals.
In Rio the basketball team finished third,
Taking home a bronze with total dignity;
He’s a 4.0 player, has travelled the world,
Enjoying playing for Italian clubs infinitely.
Born on 31 January 1968, amputated 22,
He lives in Peacehaven in East Sussex,
But flips between there and Italy so beaux,
To train, although Milton Keynes is apex.

On the field of battle,
Young brave and strong,
We are stripling warriors,
Ready to bring it on!
We are fighting the darkness,
Piercing through with truth and light!
Charity is our standard,
Faith, courage and commitment our delight!
Captained by our King and Holy Commander,
We are guided by unconquerable right!
With flaming swords in hand,
This is the truth for which we fight!
Rising up to face the gauntlet of hell,
Yet we fear no death,
For we think upon our one true King,
And more firmly upon liberty than life!
We are true at all times,
In whatsoever things we are entrusted.
As disciples of truth and soberness,
We walk uprightly before Him.
We do not doubt,
God, will deliver us!
Our family, leaders and friends,
Have taught us to believe in Christ!
Bridge: (Said in a warrior’s voice)
With such miraculous strength,
And mighty power,
We did fall upon the enemy,
That we did frighten them exceedingly.
Oh what joy to be a warrior,
For not one soul shall be lost!
We will fight and win and never quit,
No matter what the cost!

Ark of storm
A ship i called my own
A pride anew was born
I sail to a place i call home
I alone captained the ship
Through every destination and voyage
Make way for this mighty ark
Make way for a Royale anchorage
This ark of a thousand man
Within our territory we defend
With a sword in our hands
We fight till the very end...

David is Northern Ireland’s very first representative,
In a Cerebral Palsy 7-a-side Paralympic footy team;
He was so impressed by London 2012 assertive,
That he asked his managers about the GB team.
Just graduated from Queens University, Belfast,
In Computing and Information Tech, he’s a ‘90s child,
He captained the Northern Ireland football cast,
At the 2015 Worlds in St Georges Park - he’s a mild.
“Football had a big influence on my life growing up
…It helped me overcome [the] difficulties I [had]
growing up with a disability. It taught me to [rise up],
not to let my disability get in the way [of what I had]”.

Jonathan has been to three Paralympics,
Beijing in China, London 2012 and Rio;
He’s a Motherwell midfielder in the mix,
Who’s entry was the 2006 CP Euros so.
He travels the world with team Scotland,
Which he sometimes captains proudly,
But he’s also captained the other hand,
Of ParalympicsGB, in Beijing adeptly.
He holds Scottish Football Association
Coaching badges at the youth level,
Three of them, and has an education,
In sports coaching development, bevel.

Even when time stands
Still the wings of smiles
Crumble in darkness
Life stands still in places
Even where moons twinkle in
Passing moments the only
Picture hanging in this corridor is
One blank captioned “Silence”
Is always seen when glances
Are never heard leaving
Incomplete messages as yesterday is
Nothing less than a fiction of tomorrow’s
Pleasure cruises back alleyways
High seas build salty reactions
Oblivious to desiring ships already
Captained have run aground resting
On her left most beautiful side
Your left most beautiful smile intrigues
Then captures butterfly wings
Akin to music dew drops
Play on blooming flowers
Fighting two years of wither
Heart left a frost bitten
Egyptian pyramid built from
Your one dimple down snow on
African Pampas of unknown
Feelings return every rainy
Season lives in September
One trips over words never
Spoken dreams never awoken
From the nightmares titled life
Is never an easy road to run
Feet ache then burnt in winter
Suns set earlier than in the spring
Dew no longer frozen on lips
Disguised as lilies drunk off this
Intoxicating experience I waft from
Petal to petal an insignificant bee
Clothed in a garden rivaled only by Eden
Cast out to re-grow our forbidden fruit
Tree branches intertwined lost and histories
Scribed once more the ghosts of our
Former souls scream to birthed again
In tomorrow’s sunrise…

Dark eyes with darker pupils staring here
Glazed over with a prejudice within
They look with venom, wonder, hope, and fear
They’re not guilty- just victims of the sin
Deep wounds with deeper anger caught inside
Red blood slides down to join the tears and sweat
Caught in the dark, there’s still no place to hide
The ship sails on an ocean of regret
White sails with whiter masters lead the way
Though every shade had captained SS Hate
Many the trips and many the people with no say
As time plows on toward wealth or death or fate
The scars of violence stain our history
Why are we our own greatest enemy?

To Journey throughout the Seven Seas
Refereeing all their mysteries
Once one has captained his own ship
And avoided all manners indelicate dealing with the drip
God's Nature shall set you free
With abundant sustenance for all to see
Challenges met thru the toughest of degrees
Makes you a Man/Woman
Born from Adam and Eve

Behold the ship, lost at sea,
It changes direction so frequently,
And I with them, new to sea-faring,
Sit and wonder...will we ever find our bearing?
And all of a sudden it comes to me,
In a moment of divine epiphany:
That a ship, captained by only its sailors,
Cannot navigate a sea, which no-one favors,
And thus I tell my un-happy crew,
The ship will not guide itself,
It is up to you.
