Your Perfect Mate

Love that is based on a lie
quickly morphs into despair.
And you suffer its effects
as depression develops.
As time collects a collage
of conflicting emotions.
Disparaging thoughts soon take
root in the back of your mind.
Remember when innocence
was something to be valued?
And a world filled with wonder
would awe and fascinate you.
Excluded from fantasies,
the truth catches up with you.
And you realize you're not
tethered to reality.
A downpour of teardrops pools,
threatening to drown your heart.
And yet, through those trickling tears,
you glean hope from a rainbow.
Love is not an illusion,
despite the smoke and mirrors.
And if your heart perseveres,
you will find your perfect mate.
