Your Blissful Autumn Is Not Mine (DHR)

I enter your poem with silent steps
and in so doing have some regrets.
You boast about your autumn,
of how the leaves dance like a flame and
like golden butterflies fall to the ground.
You hail your merry harvest of pumpkin, nut and berry,
how plentiful and ripe this year’s crop is.

But in my world malevolence pierced a finger
through the fibre of heaven and pointed it at us.
You cannot alter a capricious sun or tame storms and floods.
The trickery of this world may confuse you at times
as to why autumn has forgotten us and never plans a visit.
Instead, the season gifted us an empty hand with malice.

Our scattered seeds only succeed in growing weeds,
never a harvest of wheat to make a loaf of bread.
Don’t be fooled by their bloated tums
because they’re full of hunger, not with food.
When there’s no food how can I share,
how can I give when there’s nothing there?
As long as life cares to stay with us we will forbear
and apportion fairly whatever measly aid we get.

If it be so, then so be it, today, tomorrow and forever.
The moon shines on us too, dark lives do matter,
so please save your metaphors and flippant Je t’adores,
and your similes when my children starve in front of me.
Call it autumn or what you please,
as leaves die in yours, so my children die in mine
In such a world what need for poetry?

Oh Pascal, this is so deeply soul-stirring and heart-wrenching.. how something blissful for some people turns into a catastrophe for others.. how we often take things for granted or 'normal' while it's a dream for others.. I felt the angst flowing throughout your lines and also the vulnerable emotions, so aching ... "But in my world malevolence pierced a finger through the fibre of heaven and pointed it at us. You cannot alter a capricious sun or tame storms and floods." Sigh, the harshness of life! I feel for the ones who suffer despite everything.. with such challenges.. truly a powerful write! sending you healing starsz .. and well wishes...💫💫🌙🌙

Thank you so much for your starry well wishes Hiya. Unfortunately this is a recurring theme in many parts of the world. I have seen it in Africa and in Haiti and no doubt it still happens in the country of my birth, India. You may be able to comfort one person for a single day but not the many. "There, but for the grace of God.........."

Pascal, Your ability to draw attention to the harsh realities faced by many, while interweaving personal struggle with nature's cycles, adds a compelling depth to the poem. It provides a poignant reminder of the challenges some endure and encourages reflection on the role of poetry in times of hardship. The emotional weight and sincerity make it a moving read.

Thank you for your comments, Sotto. I am pleased you found it emotional and moving. I have written a number of poems on this theme and will submit one or two.

Oh wow. Such a profound poem on the side of the world that suffers while others have plenty. Which country do you represent here? I think Africa has suffered a lot recently as well as the middle east. Even in the USA there are families starving and weird weather conditions. I am so fortunate. At this moment I hear rain! I was hoping for it these past several days. Love this poem . A like for it!

Thank you for liking it Andrea. Spot on with Africa, the epicentre of such disasters.

Hi Pascal, this is very powerful, have you thought of entering this in Daniel's recent contest? Seems to fit the theme... I was touched😊

Thank you so much, Joanna. In fact I wrote this for Daniel's contest and I will enter it once I edit and add DHR next to the title. In general, I don't feel that my poems are 'contest quality', possibly because the language I use is not as flowery as the judges seem to like. Consequently I don't enter many contests,
